Love redeems all. I have failed to protect the ones I swore to defend. The devil himself has overcome this world, destroying Sahrahn and devouring the souls of those who encounter him. My dreams are filled with nightmares. My days are full of terror. Cities burn, entire communities are slaughtered, and cruelties beyond imagining run rampant as the god of death unleashes his power upon the desert and my people. A divine message descends upon me, prophesying that I am to play a crucial role in this devastating war between angels, djinn, and men. I carry the last chance for the realm within me, and cannot afford to lose again. Guided by nothing but blind faith, my destiny will determine the fate of my kingdom, and the future of those who inhabit it. The love Zahid and I share will bring the realm to its knees. My marriage is the one thing standing in the way of darkness claiming this land forever. My only hope isn’t revenge. It’s redemption.

We serve a God who takes our brokenness and redeems and restores us if we allow Him. Healing through our past scars is vitally important to our health spiritually and physically. To be able to understand where these hurts are rooted is essential for our freedom. Forgiving the abuser and recognizing they have foundational cracks that have never been repaired help in the forgiving process. Many of us have foundational repairs that need made but often do not want to go through the process of rebuilding the structure. My prayer is that you see where the cracks are, seek healing, forgive, and live in the beauty God designed for you, which comes from the ashes of our despair.

Elizabeth Fahn-Weedor was born in Liberia into a Muslim family, but she later became a Christian. She fled her home country and traveled to the Ivory Coast, where she lived for three and a half years as a refugee due to one of Africas bloodiest and brutal civil wars. This civil war led to her toddler daughter coming close to death and being saved, through a miracle, in the killing fields. This experience left Elizabeth holding on tightly for dear life to her faith in God and being granted strength she had never known before. Faith in Christ would bring redemption for Elizabeth and her family as they went through the painful fire of suffering and separation from loved ones who were still stranded in Liberia and as they escaped into a new life filled with many challenges in the United States. Elizabeth later served as a missionary in Ethiopia for four and a half years with her husband Anthony Weedor and their four children. Because she grew up in a culture that did not believe and encourage the education of girls, Elizabeth got her early education through the courageous and financial assistance of her dearest grandmother, who stood fearlessly against a male-dominant society to make education a priority for her granddaughters. Today, Elizabeth is benefiting from her grandmothers determination to give a girl an education. As a result of her grandmothers bold stance on impacting women in her culture, Elizabeth is determined to do likewise for girls and women who find themselves in similar traditional practices and worldviews, not forgetting violence against women. Elizabeth continues to serve in missions with her husband, Anthony, who is Africas desk director at Advancing Native Missions, based in Afton, Virginia.

*#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER *Winner, Kobo Emerging Writer Prize Nonfiction *Winner, Indigenous Voices Awards *Winner, High Plains Book Awards *Finalist, CBC Canada Reads *A Globe and Mail Book of the Year *An Indigo Book of the Year *A CBC Best Canadian Nonfiction Book of the Year In this extraordinary and inspiring debut memoir, Jesse Thistle, once a high school dropout and now a rising Indigenous scholar, chronicles his life on the streets and how he overcame trauma and addiction to discover the truth about who he is. If I can just make it to the next minute...then I might have a chance to live; I might have a chance to be something more than just a struggling crackhead. From the Ashes is a remarkable memoir about hope and resilience, and a revelatory look into the life of a Métis-Cree man who refused to give up. Abandoned by his parents as a toddler, Jesse Thistle briefly found himself in the foster-care system with his two brothers, cut off from all they had known. Eventually the children landed in the home of their paternal grandparents, whose tough-love attitudes quickly resulted in conflicts. Throughout it all, the ghost of Jesse’s drug-addicted father haunted the halls of the house and the memories of every family member. Struggling with all that had happened, Jesse succumbed to a self-destructive cycle of drug and alcohol addiction and petty crime, spending more than a decade on and off the streets, often homeless. Finally, he realized he would die unless he turned his life around. In this heartwarming and heart-wrenching memoir, Jesse Thistle writes honestly and fearlessly about his painful past, the abuse he endured, and how he uncovered the truth about his parents. Through sheer perseverance and education—and newfound love—he found his way back into the circle of his Indigenous culture and family. An eloquent exploration of the impact of prejudice and racism, From the Ashes is, in the end, about how love and support can help us find happiness despite the odds.
