The aim of these recommendations is to harmonize and further develop the methods, according to which excavations are prepared, calculated and carried out. Since 1980, these have been drawn up by the working group "Excavations" at the German Geotechnical Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Geotechnik DGGT) and are similar to a set of standards. They help to simplify analysis of excavation enclosures, to unify load approaches and analysis procedures, to guarantee the stability and serviceability of the excavation structure and its individual components, and to find out an economic design of the excavation structure. For this new edition, all recommendations have been reworked in accordance with EN 1997-1 (Eurocode 7) and DIN 1054-1. In addition, new recommendations on the use of the modulus of subgrade reaction method and the finite element method (FEM), as well as a new chapter on excavations in soft soils, have been added.

With the issue of these recommendations, which have the character of a standard, the "Building Excavations" working group of the German Geotechnics Association (DGGT) aims to provide assistance with the design and structural calculation of excavation support works. The introduction of the Eurocodes for building control purposes made necessary a revision of the previous edition of the recommendations to comply with the requirements of DIN EN 1997-1:2009 together with the national annex DIN 1997-1/NA:2010-12 and the supplementary regulations of DIN 1054:2010-12. All recommendations were thoroughly checked, revised where necessary and adapted to new knowledge. Chapter 10 "Building excavations in water" was substantially revised. Due to the progress of development of measurement instruments and the more stringent requirements, Chapter 14 "Instrumentation for the monitoring and supervision of building excavation support works" was formulated completely anew. The recommendations of the working group "Building Excavations" should be of assistance, - to simplify the design and structural calculation of excavation support works, - to harmonise loading assumptions and calculation procedures, - to ensure the structural stability of excavation support works and their individual elements and - to improve the cost-effectiveness of excavation support works.

The aim of these recommendations is to harmonize and further develop the methods, according to which excavations are prepared, calculated and carried out. Since 1980, these have been drawn up by the working group for excavations at the German Society for Geotechnics (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geotechnik) under the name EAB and are similar to a set of standards. All the main software programs in Germany are based on these recommendations. The recommendations help in designing and calculating excavation constructions, unifying approaches to loads and methods of calculation. Since they are based on an approved global safety concept, following these recommendations ensures the stability and usability of excavations and their individual components. Furthermore, they help to improve the profitability of excavation constructions. The result is a work of major importance for all experts concerned with the planning and calculation of excavations.

Excavation is an important segment of foundation engineering (e.g., in the construction of the foundations or basements of high-rise buildings, underground oil tanks, or subways). However, the excavation knowledge introduced in most books on foundation engineering is too simple to handle actual excavation analysis and design. Moreover, with economic development and urbanization, excavations go deeper and are larger in scale. These conditions require elaborate analysis, design methods and construction technologies. This book is aimed at both theoretical explication and practical application. From basic to advanced, this book attempts to achieve theoretical rigor and consistency. Each chapter is followed by a problem set so that the book can be readily taught at senior undergraduate and graduate levels. The solution to the problems at the end of the chapters can be found on the website (http://www.ct.ntust.edu.tw/ou/). On the other hand, the analysis methods introduced in the book can be used in actual analysis and design as they contain the most up-to-date knowledge. Therefore, this book is suitable for teachers who teach foundation engineering and/or deep excavation courses and engineers who are engaged in excavation analysis and design.

The recommendations have been completely restructured in this 12th (2020) edition of the EAU (10th English edition), the aim being to provide readers with a better, clearer arrangement of the chapters. In addition, the information published in the annual technical reports of the Waterfront Structures Committee since the publication of the 11th German edition have been incorporated in this new edition. The recommendations also take into account the new generation of standards consisting of Eurocode 7, the associated National Application Documents and supplementary national publications (DIN 1054:2010). In isolated instances, partial safety factors differing from those in the codes are specified on the basis of practical experience. Safety standards for ports, harbours and marine structures are therefore upheld. The recommendations satisfy the need for international acceptance in the planning, design, tendering, award of contract, construction, site supervision, acceptance and settlement of accounts for port, harbour and waterway facilities based on uniform approaches.

With continued economic development and increasing urbanization, excavations go deeper and become larger in scale, and are sometimes even carried out in difficult soils. These conditions require advanced analysis and design methods and construction technologies. Most books on general foundation engineering introduce the basic analysis and design of excavation, but do not delve into practical considerations. This book examines both theory and practice, from basic to advanced, and discusses the major methods currently in practice around the world. Each chapter also includes problems and their solutions to develop a practical, real-world understanding.

This book traces the evolution of theory of structures and strength of materials - the development of the geometrical thinking of the Renaissance to become the fundamental engineering science discipline rooted in classical mechanics. Starting with the strength experiments of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, the author examines the emergence of individual structural analysis methods and their formation into theory of structures in the 19th century. For the first time, a book of this kind outlines the development from classical theory of structures to the structural mechanics and computational mechanics of the 20th century. In doing so, the author has managed to bring alive the differences between the players with respect to their engineering and scientific profiles and personalities, and to create an understanding for the social context. Brief insights into common methods of analysis, backed up by historical details, help the reader gain an understanding of the history of structural mechanics from the standpoint of modern engineering practice. A total of 175 brief biographies of important personalities in civil and structural engineering as well as structural mechanics plus an extensive bibliography round off this work.

The safe and economical construction of tunnels, mines, and other subterranean works depends on the correct choice of support systems to ensure that the excavations are stable. These support systems should be matched to the characterstics of the rock mass and the excavation techniques adopted. Establishing the support requirements, designing support systems and installing these correctly are essential elements in safe underground construction. This is a comprehensive and practical work which also gives access to user-friendly computer programmes which enable the investigation and design of support techniques. Details on how to obtain this software are also included in the book.

Professor Mazar viewed the excavations at the Temple Mount as the apex of his scientific contribution. Now his granddaughter, Dr. Eilat Mazar, continues his work and is heading the extensive project of publishing the findings from the sites. Dr. Eilat Mazar was part of the excavation team in the City of David from 1981-1985 that was headed by Professor Yigal Shiloh and from 1986-87 she lead the excavations at the Ophel on behalf of the Institute of Archeology at the Hebrew University. Dr. Mazar has been involved in archaeological research in Jerusalem for many years and has publishd numerous articles. She has written this guide in a language that everyone can understand without comprising scientific accuracy or the high level of research. This guide encompasses 3000 years of Jerusalem history and explores every period including descriptions of meaningful pieces from each era, accompanied by detailed explanations and attractive photographs and drawings. This guide is a masterful piece of work that allows the general audience a closer look at the past -- the Temple Mount in all of its original glory as it is now again revealed to our eyes. — Publisher description.
