Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War When one writes a book, a preface is in order. Mine shall be by way of explanation. The only apology I have to offer for writing this little per sonal prounoun I story is the very simple one that it is true. It has been said that we never talk so well as when talking of ourselves. Be that as it may, in telling my own story, I can tell it only in the first person. It is a story that is very dear to me, probably much more so than it will ever be to anyone else. In writing it I have lived it all over, and it has been so real to me that I have seemed to be again within hospital walls, peopled by those whom I have called up from the shadows of the past. In fancy, my mother, whose name is interwoven as a golden thread throughout the fab ric of the story, has been with me, and I have al most felt the touch of a vanished hand and heard the sound of a voice that is still. Page after page has been written beneath her picture on the wall, and as I have lifted my tear-blinded eyes with yearning gaze to her sweet face, the brown eyes. Have looked lovingly down upon me as though smiling approval upon my work. Oh, that I had undertaken it while she was yet with me! Excerpt from Personal Recollections of the Civil War This volume does, not claim to be a tactical, or strategic history of the campaigns of which it treats; it aims rather to be a narrative of the every-day life and experience of the private soldier in camp and field - how he lived, how he marched, how he fought and how he suffered. No sooner had some of the volunteers reached the front, and been subjected to the hardships and exposures of army life, than they fell sick, were sent to the hospital and were discharged without passing through any serious campaigns. Others were wounded early, were disabled and were never able to return to their regiments. The more fortunate passed sound and unscathed through battle after battle and campaign after campaign through the whole war. Three years of active campaigning and a year in the hospital was the allotment of the writer, who thus was in the service from the beginning to the end of the war. Whatever the merits or demerits of this work may be, the impressions and the composition are my own. They are an elaboration of notes made during the war and directly after it, following which, it has taken the form of a diary. Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War: With the Leaders at Washington and in the Field in the Sixties It is proper to note the circumstance that the three years covered by Mr. Dana's Recollections as here recorded constitute the only term during which he held any public office, and the only break in more than half a century of continuous experience in the making of newspapers. His connection with the Gov ernment during those momentous years is an episode in the story of a life that throbbed from boyhood to age with intellectual energy, and was crowded with practical achievement. Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War: With Many Original Diary Entries and Letters Written From the Seat of War, and With Annotated References A the time of his death, my father was nearing the completion of a first draft of his manuscript, which, if he had lived, would have been continued to the conclusion of the war, and then carefully revised in the light of his lifelong study of the historical whole, we have gained much that might not have survived a careful revision. In this first written expression of his recollections and studies of the War time, while as yet he had not a perspective of the book as a whole, his reminiscent moods have led him back over those paths primarily; where his interest was most intense, and the depth of the impressions and intensity of the feelings have been the impulses which for the most part determined what the subjects should be and how much should be said of them. While not a history as a whole, events so selected and so related have a peculiar historical value of their own. There are many histories of the war and autobiographies of great generals, but autobiographies of the soldier in the camp and in the ranks are few. The life of the nation has overshadowed for the time the lives of the men who saved the nation; but it is the men for whom the nation is worth saving, and whose lives in the war are mere incidents of histories, who are the subject of this unfinished story by one of the soldiers. Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War and Going West to Grow Up With the Country I once heard that prince of orators, Colonel In gersoll, say in a public address, We of the North owned slaves but we found it didn't pay, hence we concluded it wasn't right. Anybody can see that a thing isn't right when it doesn't pay. And Henry W. Grady, in his address on the New South before the New England society of New York, put it this way: Had Mr. Tombs said, which he did not say, that he would call the roll of his slaves at the foot of Bunker Hill, he would have been foolish, for he might have known that whenever slavery became entangled in war it must perish; that the chattel in human flesh ended forever in New England when your fathers, not to be blamed for parting with what did not pay, sold their slaves to our fathers, not to be praised for know ing a paying thing when they saw it. And in this connection I recall that in the case of Dred Scott against Sanford, the decision of which held that Scott was the slave of Sanford, notwithstanding he had been voluntarily taken into territory where slavery was prohibited by the terms of the Missouri compro mise act, and which did so much to bring on the war, the defendant Sanford was a New Yorker. Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War A valued friend, who ranks as one of the ablest of American critics, to whom I have submitted these Recol lections for the purpose Of deciding whether they should, or should not, be given book publication, has just written me as follows: I have read the entire manuscript with very much interest and pleasure. It contains a great deal that is new to me and, I venture to say, that will be new to nine hundred and ninety-nine out of a thousand of the generation who took no active part in the affairs of the country in war times. Valuable side-light is thrown by your disclosures on some of the hidden springs and inner workings Of the times, and it appears to me that it is worthy to be preserved on account of its intrinsic value. In the hope that the reader may concur in the Opinion of this most excellent gentleman, this volume is given to the public.
