Excerpt from Recollections of My Old Home Town For want of a better name, I am going to call what I have written and what I am going to write, recollections OF MY old home town. It is generally said about a man who talks about the past that he is getting old. Be that as it may, I know there is a lot of early history of this town that has been lost, as the people who knew about it are gone, and it was not put on paper; furthermore there is a lot more going to be lost the same way very shortly if something is not done to preserve it. Consequently, I have decided to jot down a few things for my own amusement principally. I want to get them down on paper before I forget them. I have no idea that what I may write will interest many people, but I know of a few who will be glad to read it. My recollections as I think of them now are pleasant. I try to forget the unpleasant ones. That is a pretty good philosophy anyway. I happen to belong to the Elks and their ritual teaches this in the following beautiful words. Excerpt from Memories of the Old Homestead This is the story of my old Lorraine home, and I tell it, thinking it may be of interest to my children or to the children of others of the family. I have not attempted to give an elaborate family history, but have written of the early times in the old homestead and of some of the things that there took place, as I now remember them. If in this recital the personal pronoun occurs too often, it must be remembered that I am talking, principally, of my own recollections. Neither do I wish to convey the impression that the writer did any more than his proper share of the work or had more interesting experiences than others of the family. Indeed, being the youngest of a family of nine, it is more likely that he, the baby, had the easiest time of any, and, if any favors were shown, he got his full share. I intended to occupy but a few pages, but as I got into the subject I found more difficulty as to what I should omit than what to tell, and as material for volumes crowded my mind, I fully realized that the old live in the past, the young in the future. Excerpt from The Home Town Mind No one's home town is the exclusive hero of this collection. During the past twenty years more than half a dozen communities from New England to Texas have sustained the burden of the author's residence and suffrages. I have drawn freely upon the civic temperamental symptoms of most of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Old Town How small this world of ours is, and how close we are, all unknowing, to one another! I had set out to write the story of the Old Town with no thought that it touched the land across the seas and its people in any closer way than through these pages, and through the abiding affection of a few of its children who, like myself, have wandered far from home. And while I wrote there fell into my hands the account Of a sale of some building lots half a dozen years ago, in Jersey City, part of a property which for three hundred years had belonged to the Van Riepen family. And the Van Riepen name was shown to mean from Ribe the Old Town itself. This is the historical record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Around an Old Homestead: A Book of Memories His is but a small sheaf among many others; for, as the floor of the woods is covered with fallen leaves and pieces of detached bark, so the little wood land of my thoughts is strewn over with these rough fragments and memories. Yet the old homestead still stands as I have written it. There is no latch string. It is always open to receive us. I wish I could say that I have in this T book made some distinct contribution of my own to the appreciation and enjoyment of the beauty of life. But it has at least expressed my trying. Excerpt from Clovernook, or Recollections of Our Neighborhood in the West Without a thought of making a book, I began to recall some shadows and sunbeams that fell about me as I came up to womanhood, incidents for the most part of so little apparent moment or significance that they who live in what is called the world would scarcely have marked them had they been detained with me while they were passing, and before I was aware, the record of my memories grew to all I now have printed.
