In Recollections of My Life as a Woman, Diane di Prima explores the first three decades of her extraordinary life. Born into a conservative Italian American family, di Prima grew up in Brooklyn but broke away from her roots to follow through on a lifelong commitment to become a poet, first made when she was in high school. Immersing herself in Manhattan's early 1950s Bohemia, di Prima quickly emerged as a renowned poet, an influential editor, and a single mother at a time when this was unheard of. Vividly chronicling the intense, creative cauldron of those years, she recounts her revolutionary relationships and sexuality, and how her experimentation led her to define herself as a woman. What emerges is a fascinating narrative about the courage and triumph of the imagination, and how one woman discovered her role in the world.

Shortlisted for the James Tait Black Prize for Biography Longlisted for The Orwell Prize for Political Writing An electric portrait of the artist as a young woman that asks how a writer finds her voice in a society that prefers women to be silent, from the author of Orwell's Roses In Recollections of My Nonexistence, Rebecca Solnit describes her formation as a writer and as a feminist in 1980s San Francisco, in an atmosphere of gender violence on the street and throughout society and the exclusion of women from cultural arenas. She tells of being poor, hopeful, and adrift in the city that became her great teacher, and of the small apartment that, when she was nineteen, became the home in which she transformed herself. She explores the forces that liberated her as a person and as a writer--books themselves; the gay community that presented a new model of what else gender, family, and joy could mean; and her eventual arrival in the spacious landscapes and overlooked conflicts of the American West. Beyond being a memoir, Solnit's book is also a passionate argument: that women are not just impacted by personal experience, but by membership in a society where violence against women pervades. Looking back, she describes how she came to recognize that her own experiences of harassment and menace were inseparable from the systemic problem of who has a voice, or rather who is heard and respected and who is silenced--and how she was galvanized to use her own voice for change.

The provocative, audacious, brilliant six-volume autobiographical novel that has unquestionably been the main event of contemporary European literature. It has earned favorable comparisons to its obvious literary forebears "A la recherche du temps perdu" and "Mein Kampf" but has been celebrated as the rare magnum opus that is intensely, addictively readable.

By 1888, twenty years after the publication of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was one of the most popular and successful authors America had yet produced. In her pre-Little Women days, she concocted blood-and-thunder tales for low wages; post-Little Women, she specialized in domestic novels and short stories for children. Collected here for the first time are the reminiscences of people who knew her, the majority of which have not been published since their original appearance in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the printed recollections in this book appeared after Alcott became famous and showcase her as a literary lion, but others focus on her teen years, when she was living the life of Jo March; these intimate glimpses into the life of the Alcott family lead the reader to one conclusion: the family was happy, fun, and entertaining, very much like the fictional Marches. The recollections about an older and wealthier Alcott show a kind and generous, albeit outspoken, woman little changed by her money and status. From Annie Sawyer Downs’s description of life in Concord to Anna Alcott Pratt’s recollections of the Alcott sisters’ acting days to Julian Hawthorne’s neighborly portrait of the Alcotts, the thirty-six recollections in this copiously illustrated volume tell the private and public story of a remarkable life.

Excerpt from Recollections of My Life, Vol. 1 of 3 A year has elapsed since the mournful tragedy of Queretaro closed the career of one of the most gifted, genial, and chivalrous of princes; of one who seemed destined, by his liberal and enlightened policy, to develop the wonderful resources of a great empire, and to advance the cause of civilisation over the world. This was not to be; betrayed by his trusted officer into the hands of his ruthless enemies, nothing but his blood would satisfy them, and Mexico will probably again fall into the same anarchy from Which she might have been rescued by Maximilian. The public will feel an additional interest from his sad fate in the following graphic account of the voyages and travels of this estimable prince. The work was not originally intended for publication, and only fifty copies were struck off at the Geheime Staatsdruckerei' (privy state printing-office) in Vienna. Excerpt from Recollections of My Life, Vol. 3 of 3 This morning found us off the lofty, far-extending ridges of Teneriffe. Although the day was cloudy, the panorama that presented itself was very interesting, and new ln its features. Picturesquely did the long serrated ridge of the volcanic mountain display itself, with its sharp angular summit, its pointed Needles which, springing as it were from an extraneous nature, gazed up towards heaven from among the dark clouds, sometimes like the menacing finger of a giant, sometimes like the tower of a lofty ruin. Various deep rifts of volcanic origin extend down the heights, casting their deep shadows over the picture, even to the boiling sea. Between these, and flowing gently down from the black peaks of rock to the ocean, are the layers of cold lava. Thousands of years ago they caused death now Victorious nature (as on the ridges of Vesuvius) pursues her upward course over the vanquished lava. That the volcano has long been silent one may see by the fresh turf which creeps over the red earth almost to the top of the highest summit; by the pine woods, which force a way for themselves among the picturesque masses of rock and finally by the numerous houses and hamlets which, scattered among fields of well-ordered husbandry, enliven the sombre scene in a cheerful manner far up thc height. The whole resembles the northern coast of Madeira: one finds the same red-coloured soil, the same turf growing on the mountains, the same dusky colouring in the masses of rock; only, in addition to these.
