Excerpt from Recollections, Personal and Literary His youth showed again how much more inborn tendency has to do with one's life than any exter nal forces, such as guardianship, means, and what we call education. The thrush takes to the bough, wheresoever hatched and fledged. Many waters cannot quench genius, neither can the floods drown it. The story of Dickens's boyhood, as told by him self, is not more pathetic, nor is its outcome more beautiful, than the story of Richard Henry Stod dard's experiences, his orphanage, his few years' meagre schooling, his work as a boy in all sorts of shifting occupations, the attempt to make a learned blacksmith of him, his final apprenticeship to iron moulding, at which he worked on the East Side from his eighteenth to his twenty-first year. As Dr. Griswold put it, he began to mould his thoughts into the symmetry of verse while he moulded the molten metal into shapes of grace. Stoddard, how ever, afterward said that a knowledge of foundries was not one of the learned doctor's strong points. Excerpt from My Recollections Were I to live a thousand years - which is hardly likely - I should never forget that fateful day, February 24, 1848, when I was just six years old. Not so much because it coincided with the fall Of the Monarchy of July, as that it marked the first steps of my musical career - a career which, even yet, I am not sure was my real destiny, so great is my love for the exact sciences! At that time I lived with my parents in the Rue de Beaune in an apartment overlooking the great gardens. The day promised to be fine, but it was very cold. Excerpt from Collections and Recollections But events, however striking, are only landmarks in memory. They are isolated and detached, and begin and end in themselves. The real interest of one's early life is in its Links with the Past, through the old people whom one has known. Though I place my first distinct recollection in 1856, I have memories more or less hazy of an earlier date. Excerpt from Random Recollections Though no portions of the first and second editions of this work were on sale, they were soon exhausted in supply ing calls on me for copies. The requests in numerous news papers and letters that I would place the book where it could be purchased, amounted almost to a rebuke for my not hav ing done this. In compliance with this desire, I have spent a few weeks in preparing a third edition, which will be issued and sold by a book-publishing house. The new matter in this third edition makes the volume about two thirds larger than the second edition, and about three times as large as the first. This production is neither a history, a biography, nor an autobiography, but is exactly what it professes to be, namely, some random recollections of the writer. It will be well to read it from that point of View. Such value as this draft on my memory may possess is mainly due to the fact that in describing events and men I have usually told only what I personally knew of them and, perhaps better than all, I have tried to stop when I was done. Excerpt from A Rebel's Recollections A rebel's recollections was published in 1874. It has ever since enjoyed a degree of public favor that is perhaps beyond its merits. However that may be, my friends among the historians and the critical students of history have persuaded me that, for the sake of historical complete ness, I should include in this new edition of the book the prefatory essay on The Old Régime in the Old Dominion, which first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly for November, 1875. Excerpt from Some Recollections On Adams Street, near Concord was a public school, which was a large one, and I think the only one in Brook lyn at that time. On Henry Street, near Pineapple Street, Mr. Hegeman had a large private school. A very good class of boys attended, almost as many as attended the Classical Hall. It had a belfry with a large bell which could be heard at a long distance, and which served to call the three schools to their studies. I remember the bell, for four or five of us one bitter cold night got up in the belfry and upset the bell, making it fast with the mouth up, and filled it half full of water which froze solid before morning; and it was very late the next morning when it rung again. Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions IN giving these Recollections and Impressions to the public, I feel some sort of explanation is due, - and the explanation is, that they were written at long intervals during the last four or five years, entirely for my grandchildren, and are therefore of a more domestic character than if a larger audience had been anticipated. I have never kept a diary, and am conscious that what I have written is often very desultory, and at all times it is difficult to keep reminiscences from being a dry catalogue of names. Had I even suppressed the personal note, the sketches of well-known people who came into our life might appear too like detached portraits, lacking a frame. Such as they are, I shall feel grate ful and pleased if my readers find some little interest in any of them. If they fail to attract.
