The Colorado Group is the thickest and most regionally extensive succession of Cretaceous rocks in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Colorado Group shales contain proven source rocks and hydrocarbon reserves, yet the details of their origin, composition, distribution, and maturity are largely unknown. This report presents research undertaken to address this knowledge gap and to identify distinct shale units in the studied interval, evaluate the depositional & facies controls on shale composition, and provide quantitative mineralogy & bulk chemical properties that may be used for wireline calibration and source rock & reservoir characterization. The research consisted of a basin-scale multidisciplinary study that refines the Cretaceous shale stratigraphy and provides a regional basis for further detailed exploration & exploitation of Colorado Group hydrocarbon & mineral resources. The study integrates geochemical, biofacies, and sedimentological data to identify discrete shale formations within the previously undifferentiated Group. Detailed geochemical and facies analyses provide new information on source-rock distribution and maturity. Results are also presented from pyrolysis & mineralogical studies, paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and identification of diagenetic processes.

This volume presents a suite of detailed stratigraphic and sedimentologic investigations of the Eocene Green River Formation of Wyoming, Colorado and Utah, one of the world’s foremost terrestrial archives of lacustrine and alluvial deposition during the warmest portion of the early Cenozoic. Its twelve chapters encompass the rich and varied record of lacustrine stratigraphy, sedimentology, geochronology, geochemistry and paleontology. Chapters 2-9 provide detailed member-scale synthesis of Green River Formation strata within the Greater Green River, Fossil, Piceance Creek and Uinta Basins, while its final two chapters address its enigmatic evaporite deposits and ichnofossils at broad, interbasinal scale.

This edited book is based on the best papers accepted for presentation during the 2nd Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-2), Tunisia, in 2019. It is of interest to all researchers practicing geophysics/seismology, structural, and petroleum geology. With four sections spanning a large spectrum of geological and geophysical topics with particular reference to Middle East, Mediterranean region, and Africa, this book presents a series of research methods that are nowadays in use for measuring, quantifying, and analyzing several geological domains. It starts with a subsection dedicated to the latest research studies on seismic hazard and risk assessment in Africa presented during the 2019 IGCP-659 meeting organized alongside the CAJG-2. And, it includes new research studies on earthquake geodesy, seismotectonics, archeoseismology and active faulting, well logging methods, geodesy and exploration/theoretical geophysics, petroleum geochemistry, petroleum engineering, structural geology, basement architecture and potential data, tectonics and geodynamics, and thermicity, petroleum, and other georesources. The edited book gives insights into the fundamental questions that address the genesis and evolution of our planet, and this is based on data collection and experimental investigations under physical constitutive laws. These multidisciplinary approaches combined with the geodynamics of tectonic provinces and investigations of potential zones of natural resources (petroleum reservoirs) provide the basis for a more sustainability in the economic development.
