Excerpt from Recent Happenings in Persia The following pages represent my first, and in all probability my last, attempt at authorship. That even this venture would have been undertaken is improbable in the extreme were it not that the great majority of those who are familiar with recent developments in Persia are, from the very nature of the positions which they occupy, debarred from making their knowledge public, and that events which have resulted in the extinction of British prestige in Persia, with inevitable consequences in the adjacent countries, ought to have a wider publicity than they at present possess. Moreover, although it is admittedly dangerous to argue from the particular to the general, it is not altogether unreasonable to regard the Cabinet's doings in Persia as exemplifying their methods in wider spheres. Excerpt from Persia in Revolution: With Notes of Travel in the Caucasus The latter section of the book - ih Trans caucasia-has, however, nothing to say of Persian revolutions or of Persian politics. Still, it is not a far cry from Northern Persia to Transcaucasia; the transition is not violent, both belong to the Middle East the one is a Russian province, the other is in Russia's sphere of influence. What Transcaucasia said yesterday, Persia is saying to-day. To Western Europe the chief political interest of this part of the world lies in the doings of Russia therein; and there is a connection between the Persian section of the book and the section about the Caucasus, because both in Persia and the Caucasus the persons with whom we mostly came into contact represented. Excerpt from Behind an Eastern Veil: A Plain Tale, of Events Occurring in the Experience of a Lady, Who Had an Unique Opportunity of Observing, the Inner Life of Ladies of the Upper Class in Persia IT may be well that I should state that the de scriptions of things Persian in this book are ab solutely accurate. The episode of the Crown of Glory really took place; while the account of the great earthquake in Shiraz is given from the lips of one who was present at that appalling catastrophe. Strange things are here described, but they have happened, and will happen again nothing is exaggerated, nothing overdrawn, in this Plain Tale of life in Persia. As to the spelling of Persian words, the example of Morier is followed, and they are spelt as pronounced, no. Excerpt from The Struggle for Persia None of my predecessors (and they may be counted on the fingers) who have taken the almost impassable route between Eastern Russia (via Tabriz) to Teheran having thought fit to record their experiences, it devolves upon my unworthy self to narrate mine in this veritable "terra incognita." The interest lately awakened in England with reference to Persian affairs, together with the lamentable loss of British prestige and British influence, and the overwhelming power of Russia - as they appeared to me - must be my further excuse for bringing them to the notice of all lovers of king and country, in the earnest hope that means may be found to retrieve the paramount supremacy of England in a country where once it was without a rival. Charles Rollin, a French historian and educator, took it upon himself to write compendiums of Ancient history. Rollin's Ancient History: History of the Persians is an in depth look at Persia through geography, politics, and history. The book begins exploring the "Physical History of Persia" which refers to the provinces of Persia. While exploring the Western, Eastern, and Central provinces, Rollin also goes into depth on specific places such as Gedrosia, Carmania, and Arachosia. Rollin also explores topical elements such as mountains, rivers, and lakes of note. In addition, he examines the climate of Persia and the multitude of things Persia produces. This physical history is a solid foundation for further exploration of Persia. The next section of the book explores political history. Rollins examines the power of Persian kings. He also discusses the Seven State Counselors, and administrative powers. In addition, he looks at both military power and priestly power in Persia. Rollin knows that understanding the political history of Persia helps the reader get a greater understanding of Persia as a whole. To increase the reader's knowledge of Persian politics, Rollin dedicates the next section to discussing specific Persian Kings and their reigns. Ultimately, it is the politics of Persia that truly interest Rollin and he dedicates the end of the book to discussing that and its importance. But while dynasties are ruled by kings and are powerful at one point in time, Rollin leaves the reader with a final thought: "In this age, power and empire are in the hands of one people; in the next, a nation unheard of before comes forth, and rudely plucks it from their hands. By whose direction do these things occur?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
