This book is devoted to Professor Jürgen Lehn, who passed away on September 29, 2008, at the age of 67. It contains invited papers that were presented at the Wo- shop on Recent Developments in Applied Probability and Statistics Dedicated to the Memory of Professor Jürgen Lehn, Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, April 23–24, 2009, which was jointly organized by the Technische Univ- sität Darmstadt (TUD) and METU. The papers present surveys on recent devel- ments in the area of applied probability and statistics. In addition, papers from the Panel Discussion: Impact of Mathematics in Science, Technology and Economics are included. Jürgen Lehn was born on the 28th of April, 1941 in Karlsruhe. From 1961 to 1968 he studied mathematics in Freiburg and Karlsruhe, and obtained a Diploma in Mathematics from the University of Karlsruhe in 1968. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Regensburg in 1972, and his Habilitation at the University of Karlsruhe in 1978. Later in 1978, he became a C3 level professor of Mathematical Statistics at the University of Marburg. In 1980 he was promoted to a C4 level professorship in mathematics at the TUD where he was a researcher until his death.

At the International Indian Statistical Association Conference, held at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, participants focused on advancements in theory and methodology of probability and statistics. This is one of two volumes containing invited papers from the meeting. The 32 chapters deal with different topics of interest, including stochastic processes and inference, distributions and characterizations, inference, Bayesian inference, selection methods, regression methods, and methods in health research. The text is ideal for applied mathematicians, statisticians, and researchers in the field.

This book moves systematically through the topic of applied probability from an introductory chapter to such topics as random variables and vectors, stochastic processes, estimation, testing and regression. The topics are well chosen and the presentation is enriched by many examples from real life. Each chapter concludes with many original, solved and unsolved problems and hundreds of multiple choice questions, enabling those unfamiliar with the topics to master them. Additionally appealing are historical notes on the mathematicians mentioned throughout, and a useful bibliography. A distinguishing character of the book is its thorough and succinct handling of the varied topics.

This introduction to modern concepts of applied stochastic processes is written for a broad range of applications in diverse areas of engineering and the physical sciences (unlike other books, which are written primarily for communications or electrical engineering). Emphasis is on clarifying the basic principles supporting current prediction techniques. The first eight chapters present the probability theory relevant to analysis of stochastic processes. The following nine chapters discuss principles, advanced techniques (including the procedures of spectral analysis and the development of the probability density function) and applications. Also features material found in the recent literature such as higher-order spectral analysis, the joint probability distribution of amplitudes and periods and non-Gaussian random processes. Includes numerous illustrative examples.
