Quantitative Linguistics is a rapidly developing discipline covering more and more areas of linguistic and textological research. The book represents an overview of the state of the art in Quantitative Linguistics, its scope and reach. Some of the topics: linguistic laws, frequency analyses, synergetic models of language, networks, part-of-speech systems, authorship attribution, polyfunctionality and polysemy, and opinion target identification.

QUALICO has been held for the first time as an international conference to demonstrate the state of the art in quantitative linguistics. This domain of language study and research is gaining considerable interest due to recent advances in linguistic modelling, particularly in computational linguistics, cognitive science, and developments in mathematics like modern systems theory. Progress in hardware and software technology, together with ease of access to data and numerical processing, has provided new means of empirical data acquisition and the application of mathematical models of adequate complexity. This volume contains the papers read at QUALICO 91, and provides a representative overview of the state of the art in quantitative linguistic research.

Required reading for computational linguists, this work contains a series of important contributions to the science of language, focusing on the study of word length. The book includes an introduction to the history and state of the art of word length studies. The studies included unify contributions from three crucial fields of study in linguistics: linguistics and text analysis, mathematics and statistics, and corpus and database design. Together they provide a comprehensive approach to the quantitative study of text and language.

Founding Editor: Gabriel Altmann The series Quantitative Linguistics publishes books on all aspects of quantitative methods and models in linguistics, text analysis and related research fields. Specifically, the scope of the series covers the whole spectrum of theoretical and empirical research, ultimately striving for an exact mathematical formulation and empirical testing of hypotheses: observation and description of linguistic data, application of methods and models, discussion of methodological and epistemological issues, modelling of language and text phenomena.

Over the past two decades, statistical and other quantitative concepts, models and methods have been increasingly gaining importance and interest in all areas of linguistics and text analysis, as well as in a number of neighboring disciplines and areas of application. The term "quantitative linguistics" comprises all scientific and technical approaches which use such terms and methods in the analysis of or work with language(s), texts and other related subjects. The 71 articles in this handbook, written by internationally-recognized experts, offer a broad, up-to-date overview of the scientific-theoretical principles, the history, the diversity of the subject areas studied, the methods and models used, the results obtained thus far and their applications. The articles are divided up into thirteen chapters: the first chapter includes contributions on the basic principles and the history of the field, nine additional chapters are dedicated to individual descriptions of the levels of linguistic research (from phonology to pragmatics) as well as typological, diachronic and geolinguistic questions. The next two chapters include a description of important models, hypotheses and principles; selected areas of application; and references to neighboring disciplines. The last portion of the handbook is an informative contribution, with information about publication forums, bibliographies, major projects, Internet links, etc. This handbook is useful not only for researchers, teachers and students of all branches of linguistics and the philologies, but also for scientists in neighboring fields, whose theoretical and empirical research touches on linguistic questions (for instance, psychology and sociology), or for those who want to make use of the proven methods or results from quantitative linguistics in their own research.

Language, The Law and The Probits (short for probabilities) was the title originally chosen for this book. It had to be abandoned, as it did not seem suitable for a volume in a series of mathematical monographs, but it was retained as the heading of Chapter 3. It is meant to bring home to the reader that the mathematical linguist was not just a purveyor of statistical ironmongery, deriving ad hoc methods for particular out-of-the-way problems, but that mathematical linguistics are part and parcel of linguistics, just as The Prophets are of the Old Testament.

The edited volume Sequences in Language and Text is the first collection of original research in the area of the quantitative analysis of sequentially organized linguistic data. Linguistic sequences are extremely useful textual structures in almost all areas of Language Technology. Character and word n-grams are by far the most successful features in text classification tasks such as authorship identification, text categorization, genre classification, sentiment analysis etc. Furthermore character linguistic sequences are the basis for linguistic modeling and subsequent applications such as speech recognition, language identification etc. In addition to the above language technology oriented research, the present volume aims to give insight to the theoretical value of linguistic sequences. Sequences in texts can be produced by a number of different factors, either external to the linguistic system or by its own grammatical structure. This volume hosts contributions which will analyze linguistic sequences using quantitative methods under the synergetic theoretical framework that can explain their role in the linguistic system.

The Bibliography of Quantitative Linguistics (BQL) comprises more than 6500 titles from all areas of quantitative linguistic research. Publications have been included without restrictions regarding form, place, language, and date of publication. This bibliography thus provides, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of, and easy bibliographical access to, publications in quantitative linguistics, a linguistic discipline characterized by its rapid and promising scientific development, and its increasing significance for most branches of theoretical and applied language studies. The bibliography consists of: an introduction and instructions for use; a main section containing more than 6500 titles, which is subdivided in 28 thematic classes, each forming a chapter; an index of authors; an index of keywords from titles; indices of subject headings and subheadings; an index of uncontrolled vocabulary; an index of languages investigated; an index of reviewed publications. All texts and indices are in English, German and Russian.

Since the 1960s quantitative linguistics has undergone a great development marked especially by attempts to work systematically with language phenomena on all language levels. Besides traditional areas where significant results were already achieved before the 60s (phonology, graphemics and lexicology), quantitative linguistics has now also penetrated into morphology, syntax, stylistics, history and typology of languages and, more recently, into semantics. This book gives a comprehensive account of the various developments and applications in quantitative linguistics. After an overview of methods used in quantitative linguistics, it discusses the main areas: lexical statistics, grammatical statistics and semantics statistics, with reference to a great number of studies of different languages and language families. Chapter 4 deals with other domains (phonology, graphemics, stylistics, typology, development of languages, word-formation), Chapter 6 deals with various applications, and Chapter 7 discusses the relationship between quantitative linguistics and the computer. The volume is completed by an extensive list of references and indices of names and of subjects.
