The product of perhaps the most important research meeting in the field, this essential text outlines all the latest research in retinal degeneration. Culled from the proceedings of the International Symposium on the subject, the topics in this volume explore the etiology, cellular mechanisms, epidemiology, models and potential therapeutic measures for the blinding diseases of retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. A must-read for researchers in the field.

This book is the result of The International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration which has become perhaps the most important research meeting in the field. The topics in this volume explore the etiology, cellular mechanisms, epidemiology, generics, models and potential therapeutic measures for the blinding diseases of retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. Special focus is highlighted in the areas of Mechanisms of Photoreceptor Degeneration and Cell Death (extremely important because very little is known how or why photoreceptors die in these diseases, despite an abundance of genetic information), Age-Related Macular Degeneration (with several novel approaches to its analysis), Usher Syndrome (the most severe form of retinitis pigmentosa, which includes an early of congenital loss of hearing along with blindness), and Gene Therapy. In addition, the section on Basic Science Related to Retinal Degeneration is particularly strong with several laboratories repor.

This book will contain the proceedings of the XIV International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (RD2010), held July 13-17, 2010, in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The volume will present representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic, diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential pharmaceutical therapy.

Macular degeneration is a blinding disease with huge socioeconomic costs. This book presents a comprehensive overview of macular degeneration, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Chapters address such topics as the disease state of macular degeneration, diagnosis and management of AMD, treatment considerations, and vision rehabilitation. It is a useful resource for both novice readers and experts in the field.

This book will contain the proceedings of the XV International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (RD2012). A majority of those who will speak and present posters at the meeting will contribute to this volume. The blinding diseases of inherited retinal degenerations have no treatments, and age-related macular degeneration has no cures, despite the fact that it is an epidemic among the elderly, with 1 in 3-4 affected by the age of 70. The RD Symposium will focus on the exciting new developments aimed at understanding these diseases and providing therapies for them. Since most major scientists in the field of retinal degenerations attend the biennial RD Symposia, they are known by most as the “best” and “most important” meetings in the field. While advances in these areas of retinal degenerations will be described, there will be many new topics that either were in their infancy or did not exist at the time of the last RD Symposium, RD2010. These include the role of inflammation and immunity, as well as other basic mechanisms, in age-related macular degeneration, several new aspects of gene therapy, and revolutionary new imaging and functional testing that will have a huge impact on the diagnosis and following the course of retinal degenerations, as well as to provide new quantitative endpoints for clinical trials. The retina is an approachable part of the central nervous system (CNS), and there is a major interest in neuroprotective and gene therapy for CNS diseases and neurodegenerations, in general. It should be noted that with successful and exciting initial clinical trials in neuroprotective and gene therapy, including the restoration of sight in blind children, the retinal degeneration therapies are leading the way towards new therapeutic measures for neurodegenerations of the CNS. Many of the successes recently reported in these areas of retinal degeneration sprang from collaborations established at previous RD Symposia, and many of those will be reported at the RD2010 meeting and included in the proposed volume. We anticipate the excitement of those working in the field and those afflicted with retinal degenerations will be reflected in the volume.

As the number of patients with macular diseases continues to increase, new diagnostic and therapeutic tools are simultaneously being introduced. This book presents new clinical approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of macular diseases. Internationally recognized surgeons present their latest results regarding their experiences in the macular area. Macular hole surgery is discussed in detail, as well as different therapeutic approaches for age related macular degeneration. A description on the latest advances in laser scanning ophthalmoscopy and in multi-focal ERG is also included. Other papers examine complications in the removal of the posterior vitreous cortex, the use of intraocular implants for drug delivery, and a review of current experimental therapies for AMD. This book will appeal to retinologists, ophthalmologists, and in particular retinal surgeons, with an interest in future developments in this field.

Choroidal Disorders provides an overview on various chorioretinal disorders with a special emphasis on choroidal imaging. As our understanding of the choroid has significantly improved with the development of advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its role in posterior segment diseases is gaining new significance, this book focuses on the related improvements, diagnostic capabilities, management and prognosis of various chorioretinal disorders. It covers conventional techniques, such as ultrasonography and indocyanine green angiography as well as the most advanced techniques, including enhanced depth imaging OCT, swept source OCT, and OCT angiography. Concise overview of various chorioretinal disorders, with special emphasis on choroidal imaging Written for practitioners and researchers in sensory systems (vision), ophthalmologists, and retina specialists Covers the most advanced imaging techniques in choroidal disorders, such as enhanced depth imaging OCT, swept source OCT, and OCT angiography
