A field experiment was carried out to determine the relative effectiveness of REALTRAIN (an engagement simulation training system) and conventional training that did not employ engagement simulation. Eight Armor/ Anti-Armor units were given a pretraining tactical test, 5 days of tactical training using either REALTRAIN or conventional methods, and a posttraining test. In addition, test units participated in a series of exercises in which REALTRAIN and conventional units opposed one another. Results showed that, in general, REALTRAIN units improved more than conventional units and achieved higher performance levels.

This report documents the results of an analysis of data collected during the implementation of a new method for small unit tactical training, known as REALTRAIN. The study was designed to measure the training effectiveness of the REALTRAIN method; to identify needs to refine REALTRAIN training techniques; and to assess the methodology used for unit evaluation. REALTRAIN exercises employ combat techniques to simulate weapons effects and weapons signatures. The REALTRAIN method provides a working context for the learning of tactical skills by armor, infantry, and anti-armor personnel in a combined arms environment.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the relative effectiveness of REALTRAIN (which is an engagement simulation training system) and conventional training. Rifle squads were given a tactical pretraining test, 3 days of training using either REALTRAIN or conventional methods, a post-training test, and finally a series of tactical exercises in which REALTRAIN and conventional squads opposed one another. Data collected on the behavior of squads during engagements were shown to be related to end-product measures of tactical performance. Resulting tactical performance data, as well as mission accomplishment and casualty exchange data, indicate REALTRAIN is more effective than conventional field training in the training of rifle squads.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the effectiveness of REALTRAIN engagement simulation training and to identify tactical team performances associated with mission accomplishment. Eight armor/anti-armor units received a pretraining tactical test, 5 days of tactical training using either REALTRAIN or conventional methods, and a postttraining test. REALTRAIN units were more likely to accomplish their mission. Successful units displayed sound tactical behavior in planning the attack, initial deployment, use of cover and concealment, surveillance, and use of firepower, regardless of type of unit or mission.
