Global trade liberalization with regard to the readymade garments industry is a topic of highest relevance for the Bangladeshi economy and linked very strongly to its changing social structure. Garment industry actually is a very new, export-oriented sector of the Bangladesh economy. It was only some twenty years ago that this sector was fully established in Bangladesh. Today it has grown to the number eighteen exporter world-wide, employing some 1.8 million people directly, of whom most of them are women, and another 10 million indirectly. The main markets are the EU and NAFTA. The development of Bangladesh garments industry was facilitated by the different Multi Fibre Arrangements. Therefore--as many other new competitors have grown over the last couple of years, namely South and East Asian including China, the ASEAN, Mexico and 24 Caribbean countries--Bangladesh's garment industry will face a difficult period after 2004.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Design (Industry, Graphics, Fashion), grade: 1.3, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: The thesis explores the value chain of Bangladesh's ready-made garments industry at a crucial point: The link between internationally operating brands and retailers and locally operating garment manufacturers. The research problem arose from the discussions about the question who can bear which responsibilities for improving the working conditions in the sector. By illustrating the various differences in the buyer-producer relations, the author sought to better understand the complex interdependencies of this network and thereby contribute to a better insight to aid all involved stakeholders to move the sector forward. Various types of relations between garment manufacturers and international buyers could be identied: Some manufacturers are relying on a wide choice of buying agents, buying houses and direct buyers. Other companies are producing mainly for direct buyers. The latter can benefit from a slightly higher profit margin but in both cases, the relations are based on oral contracts and the factories' capacity utilisation is subject to a great order fluctuation. A third and most noticeable group is characterized by very close ties to the buyers. These ties enable producers to re-negotiate order conditions in case of difficult circumstances and the first buyers are concluding long-term contracts with the manufacturers. The companies that rely on strong long-term contracts have a smaller profit margin but can manage their companies easier nevertheless because their capacity fluctuation is close to zero. At the same time, price and compliance pressure are stated as the most important challenges by the manufacturers. The enforcement of high standards on building and fire safety has become a number one topic in Bangladesh's RMG sector. According to a large part of the interviewed manufacturers, the regulations are rising too fast. They often complain about shrinking profit margins that would not allow them to invest in compliance. The international buyers on the other hand refer to the low productivity that should be raised by the manufacturers as a first step to gain more profitability. It can be concluded that the value chain of ready-made garments in Bangladesh shows eminent characteristics of a captive governance but there are several important distinctions to make within this category. The interviews showed evidence that the buyer-producer relations are developing towards a more cooperative relationship based on partnership. Bangladeshi Garment Industry is the largest industrial sector of the country. Though the history of Readymade Garment Industry is not older one but Bangladeshi clothing business has a golden history. Probably it started from the Mughal age in the Indian subcontinent through Dhakai Musline. It had global reputation as well as demandable market around the globe especially in the European market. After industrial revolution in the west they were busy with technological advancement & started outsourcing of ready made garments to meet up their daily demands. Many LDC's took that chance & started ready made garment export at that markets. As an LDC Bangladesh took this chance enjoyed quota & other facilities of them. Thus ready made garment industry started to contribute in our economy from late eighties (1977). The history of the garment industry dates back to 1977 when the first consignment was exported to then West Germany by Jewel Garments. The number of units, however, remained a meager 46 until the end of 1983. From a humble beginning the sector has thus made phenomenal growth over the last two decades, the number of units growing to around 4500. The RMG industry achievement is noteworthy, particularly for a country plagued with poor resource endowments and adverse conditions for industrialization. Exports increased from approximately 32 million US dollars in 1983/84 to 1.4 billion dollars in 1992/93. In 1987/88, the RMG export share surpassed that of raw jute and allied products. The figure further rose to 5.7 billion dollars in 2003/04, representing a contribution of about 75 percent of the country's total export earnings in that year. The employment generated by the sector is estimated to be around 1.5 million workers. Several factors account for the outstanding successes of the RMG industry in Bangladesh. At the same time this industry had faced & till facing many problems also. These problems & prospects of RMG industry in Bangladesh is my topic to find out as well as to make critical analysis on these. The importance of my study has been raised up by recent labor unrest in RMG sector. To analyze this board topic a took fulltime guidance from my dissertation guide Mr. A. K. M. Abduj Jaher in preparing questionnaire, operating field survey, presenting the survey report as well as constructing the report as a whole. So I am grateful to him. Here I use data from different sources like, BGMEA, BKMEA, CPD, World Bank, UNDP, Lmd Journal Published by Australian National University, CIA Report, ADB, Bureau of Economic Research - University of Dhaka, The University of Chicago Press & many other sources stated in reference section.
