Excerpt from Readings in Natural Philosophy, or a Popular Display of the Wonders of Nature, Exclusively Selected From the Transactions of the Royal Society of London, From Its Foundation to the Present Time: Chiefly Intended for the Use of Schools At this time most of the Sovereign Princes of Europe are enrolled as Fellows of this Society. In like man: r ner, too, many of the distinguished nobility of these kingdoms are among its members. Kings and nobles are, however, themselves, honoured by admission, and their names may spread a halo round the Society; but looking rigidly at the subject, it might be wished, that no one should be admitted to such an Association without first affording some personal proof of his appropriate worthiness. To be a Fellow of the Royal Society should be a distinction higher than birth or title-deeds could bestow. It should be a badge of nobility of mind; and f.r.s. Ought, through the civilised world, to afford unequivocal proof that he who was authorised to use it, deserved such pre-eminence for some attainments which no accidents of society could bestow. This scholarly and accessible study presents “a provocative new reading” of the late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century advances in scientific inquiry (Kirkus Reviews). In The Scientific Revolution, historian Steven Shapin challenges the very idea that any such a “revolution” ever took place. Rejecting the narrative that a new and unifying paradigm suddenly took hold, he demonstrates how the conduct of science emerged from a wide array of early modern philosophical agendas, political commitments, and religious beliefs. In this analysis, early modern science is shown not as a set of disembodied ideas, but as historically situated ways of knowing and doing. Shapin shows that every principle identified as the modernizing essence of science—whether it’s experimentalism, mathematical methodology, or a mechanical conception of nature—was in fact contested by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century practitioners with equal claims to modernity. Shapin argues that this contested legacy is nevertheless rightly understood as the origin of modern science, its problems as well as its acknowledged achievements. This updated edition includes a new bibliographic essay featuring the latest scholarship. “An excellent book.” —Anthony Gottlieb, New York Times Book Review

Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
