Prepare O Bethlehem is a collection of pastoral reflections on the Scripture readings that appear during the Christmas-Epiphany season. At Christmas, we prepare to once again receive Jesus into our lives, fi rst as an infant, but also as our Lord, King and Savior. Ultimately, however, we receive him as the Word made flesh and we have "beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father." (John 1:14). Th is Word comes to us through the very words of scripture, for it is here, in the Old and New Testaments where we encounter the good news of our salvation. As we read through the scripture lessons for Christmas, Epiphany, and the Meeting of the Lord we are reminded that we are given the greatest gift of all, who is Jesus Christ himself. Unfortunately, the true "reason for the season" is oft en forgotten as we are bombarded by a myriad of holiday planning, parties, and activities that surround the holiday season. Hopefully we can take a few precious moments out of our busy schedules and patiently read the Word of God as we once again prepare to meet our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

We look forward to Christmas. We prepare for Christmas. We celebrate Christmas. But do we read the Christmas scriptures? Do we really know and understand and embrace them? "They will call him Immanuel" takes on that challenge as it accompanies the reader on a tour of the two gospel stories of Jesus' conception and birth - stories that are short and sweet, but packed with incident and surprise, with angels, miracles, prophecies and songs, and with history and theology, and with so much more. Easy-to-read daily bible readings guide the reader clearly and caringly, offering refreshment, nourishment, explanation, encouragement. The readings will serve as an engaging, faith-invigorating companion for the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany season. _______________________________________ Charles Price has commented: "This series of readings by Alan James, leading up to and beyond Christmas, present a heart-warming, mind-stimulating journey tracing the familiar story that surrounds the birth of Jesus, with fresh insights. This is Scripture interpreted in a wider theological context, and reaching beyond the mind to the heart. For those who wish to go deeper, there are footnotes to enable a fuller study, which gives these studies a very wide sphere of usefulness. For those sceptical about Christianity and Christmas, to go through these readings daily will give your mind and soul something to grapple with, and the hope of a new freedom to enjoy." Charles Price, who has authored seven books, serves internationally as a Christian conference speaker, and broadcasts teaching programmes on Living Truth radio and television in many countries. He was formerly the Senior Pastor of The People's Church in Toronto, and, before that, was the Principal of Capenwray Bible School, Lancashire.

Christmas is the season of joy and peace with a charm all its own. Yet, If we are to receive everything that the Christ Child comes to give, a spiritual preparation is necessary. This book offers you a daily liturgical meditation from the beginning of Advent to the Baptism of Jesus, richly supplemented with prayers, thoughts and resolutions. The first days of Advent call to mind the return of Christ at the end of time and the long period of waiting that led up to His first coming at Christmas. The strong words of St. John the Baptist and the eloquent silence of Mary will help us open our hearts to the Infant of Bethlehem, who desires to be born anew each year in our souls. After the Nativity, the reader's glance is directed toward the manger and the Holy Family where the shepherds and the Magi invite the soul to adoration. The reader is then led through the richness of the feasts from Advent to the Epiphany, inviting him to live each day with Jesus and for Jesus.

This Little Book will be your companion, and you can take it with you wherever you wish. You can write in it, tear out a page and put it in your pocket, get extra copies and mail them to friends or family members and have a sense of praying with them each day. The left-hand page is like a buffet table with a variety of thoughts about the Advent and Christmas seasons, the feast of the day, or various traditions and customs. The key is the right-hand page where we’ll reflect on the first reading assigned for the Mass each day. This will give many people a chance to reflect on and pray passages from the Old Testament that they may have seldom heard proclaimed or preached about at liturgy.
