Over two decades since its discovery at Fermilab in 1977, the b quark has become an important laboratory for the exploration of the Standard Model as well as a potential window beyond it. Its kinematic properties, its large mass and long lifetime, and its large production cross section in hadron collisions, make it an excellent subject of study at the Tevatron {bar p}p collider. In this article, we will review recent results from CDF and D0 in two categories of tests of the Standard Model: the search for rare b decays, and the measurement of asymmetry parameters related to B° meson mixing and CP violation. The detectors have been described elsewhere. The data for the results presented here are from the 1992-96 collider run, representing at each experiment, approximately 100 pb−1 of integrated luminosity at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV.

We review the status of current B mixing and CP violation measurements from the Fermilab Tevatron. With the existing data sample, the CDF collaboration has made competitive measurements of B{sub d}° mixing; set limits on B{sub s}° mixing and has begun a direct search of CP violation in the B system through the decay B°/{anti B}°→J/[psi]K{sub S}°. The prospects for future b measurements at the Tevatron, including CP violation, B{sub s}° mixing and rare decay searches are discussed.

Between 1992 to 1996, the CDF and D0 detectors each collected data samples exceeding 100 pb−1 of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. These data sets led to a large number of precision measurements of the properties of B hadrons including lifetimes, masses, neutral B meson flavor oscillations, and relative branching fractions, and to the discovery of the B0 meson. Perhaps the most exciting result was the first look at the CP violation parameter sin ({vert_bar}2[beta]){vert_bar} using the world's largest sample of fully reconstructed B°/{bar B}° → J/[psi]K{sub s}° decays. A summary of this result is presented here. In the year 2000, the Tevatron will recommence p{bar p} collisions with an over order of magnitude expected increased in integrated luminosity (1 fb−1 per year). The CDF and D0 detectors will have undergone substantial upgrades, particularly in the tracking detectors and the triggers. With these enhancements, the Tevatron B physics program includes precision measurements of sin(2[beta]) and B{sub s}° flavor oscillations, as well as studies of rare B decays that are sensitive to new physics. The studies of B{sub s}° mesons will be particularly interesting as this physics will be unique to the Tevatron during the first half of the next decade.

We present the current status of the rare decay searches of B°{sub (s)} →??−, B →?+?−h, D+ →?+?+?− and B°{sub (s)} → h+h'− at the Tevatron Collider. We also report about the latest results on CP Violation for B° and B°{sub s} decay modes into pairs of charmless charged hadrons (pions and kaons).

This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Measurements of meson mixing and CP violation parameters obtained by the CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron are presented. These include results on B{sub s} and D meson mixing, and searches for CP violation in the decay B 2!J/[psi]K, in mixing through semileptonic B{sub s} meson decays, and in the interference between mixing and decay in the process B{sub s} 2!J/[psi][phi].

This book offers the first strong evidence of the existence of CP violation in neutral B decays extracted from sophisticated B factories in the US and Japan. It also holds out the expectation of rare B decays and D, K physics in the near future. In addition, new physics beyond the Standard Model is described. Both experimental and theoretical points of view are given.

The CDF and D0 experiments at the Tevatron p{bar p} collider established that extensive and detailed exploration of the b-quark dynamics is possible in hadron collisions, with results competitive and supplementary to those from ee− colliders. This provides a rich, and highly rewarding program that is currently reaching full maturity. I report a few recent world-leading results on rare decays, CP-violation in B{sub s}° mixing, b 2!s penguin decays, and charm physics.
