Rapid Casting and its various techniques has fast become an indispensible part of modern manufacturing. Developments in rapid casting are the result of shorter lead-time demands just as increasingly shorter lead-time demands are the result of rapid casting. This cyclical relationship has meant that the exciting developments and evolution of rapid casting techniques is truly enduring. This important publication highlights the most up-to-date developments in rapid casting from academia and industry alike. Contributions from authoritative authors come together to form this comprehensive collection of discussions and case studies.

The integration of additive manufacturing into traditional metal casting provides a wide range of rapid casting solutions. One important motive for rapid casting is additive manufacturings ability to create highly complex objects without any fixture or tooling requirements. Such advantages provide great design freedom for the geometry of cast metal parts. The objective in this thesis is to explore the part design opportunistic and restrictions of two rapid casting processes: (1) sand casting with 3D Sand Printing-fabricated molds and (2) investment casting using material extrusionfabricated wax-like patterns. Knowledge-based design guidelines are developed for both of these rapid casting processes through novel integration of topology optimization with design for casting and design for AM principles. For each process, a case study is conducted in which a mechanical metal benchmark is topologically optimized and redesigned following the proposed design rules. The redesigned parts are successfully cast and demonstrate improvements in mechanical performance and weight reduction.

This book introduces the applications of Industry 4.0 in machine tools through an overview of the latest available digital technologies. It focuses on digital twining, communication between industrial controls, motion, and input/output devices, along with sustainability in SMEs. Machine Tools: An Industry 4.0 Perspective focuses on the digital twining of machine tools, which improves the life of the machines and provides a method of operating a factory during times of complete lockdown resulting from various conditions. It presents an overview of the communication between industrial controls, motion, and input/output devices through standardized digital interfaces such as SERCOS and USB. The book goes on to discuss industrial cybersecurity systems applicable to discrete manufacturing, which includes cyberattacks and human errors, and address the security aspects related to software, hardware, and data. The book also explores the application of big data for different stages of production and illustrates the uses such as predictive maintenance, product quality, product life cycle management (PLM), and more. This book is an ideal reference for undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students of industrial, mechanical, and mechatronics engineering, along with professionals, and general readers.

There has been a great deal of progress in additive manufacturing (AM) during the past two decades and recent developments have been highlighted by many researchers. However, until now, there has been a limit to what is available for beginners in a step-by-step format, showcasing the different commercial AM technologies for field application. This book helps fill that gap. Additive Manufacturing: Applications and Innovations presents case studies of commonly used AM technologies with basic numerical problems for better understanding. It also includes hybrid processes and 4D printing applications, which currently are not offered in other AM books. Features Offers solved and unsolved problems in additive manufacturing Provides an understanding for additive manufacturing per international standards Includes case studies for better understanding of the individual processes Presents a review of specific technology highlights Introduces future research directions, mainly in 4D printing applications

"It's about time that a practicing engineer with casting and academic experience has written a book that provides answers to questions about squeeze casting and semi-solid molding/forming that many engineers and students of casting need answered." —Joseph C. Benedyk, PhD, Consultant and retired technical director, Alcoa High Integrity Die Casting Processes provides a comprehensive look at the concepts behind advanced die casting technologies, including vacuum die casting, squeeze casting, and several variants of semi-solid metalworking. Practical applications for these processes are illustrated in numerous case studies. This single-source reference tool presents the latest material in five sections: Basic concepts of die casting and molten metal flow High integrity die casting processes with case studies Product design considerations Controlling quality and avoiding defects Future advances under development Key coverage includes a survey of liquid metal flow, strategies to overcome the limitations of conventional die casting, and potential defects unique to high integrity die casting processes. Also featured are methods for minimizing porosity, reducing cost by design, practical applied statistical process control techniques, designing for manufacturability, and containment methods for potential processing defects. Several chapters present detailed real-world examples illustrating the broad range of applications possible using high integrity die casting processes. Included with this book is a CD-ROM containing PowerPoint(r) presentations for each chapter. These presentations can be used for training purposes in conjunction with numerous study questions designed to practically apply the content of the book to real-world situations. Selected PowerPoint(r) slides can be used to support engineering proposals, marketing presentations, or customer education seminars. High Integrity Die Casting Processes is a valuable reference for both component producers and component users alike. Process engineers, tool designers, manufacturing engineers, production managers, and machine operators will acquire a better understanding of these advanced die casting processes to optimize manufacturing and improve product quality. Component designers, product engineers, purchasing agents, buyers, supplier quality engineers, and project managers will gain insight into these processes and develop superior products by design.
