"Self-Reliance" is an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, a prominent American philosopher and essayist from the 19th century. Published in 1841, the essay explores the concept of individualism and the importance of trusting one's own instincts and beliefs. Emerson advocates for the rejection of conformity and societal expectations, encouraging readers to rely on their own intuition and inner convictions. The essay is a powerful call to embrace self-reliance as a means of personal growth and fulfillment, promoting the idea that true wisdom arises from individual experience and authenticity."

Excerpt from Ralph Waldo Emerson "I have the feeling that every man's biography is at his own expense. He furnishes not only the facts, but the report. I mean that all biography is autobiography. It is only what he tells of himself that comes to be known and believed." So writes the man whose life we are to pass in review, and it is certainly as true of him as of any author we could name. He delineates himself so perfectly in his various writings that the careful reader sees his nature just as it was in all its essentials, and has little more to learn than those human accidents which individualize him in space and time. About all these accidents we have a natural and pardonable curiosity. We wish to know of what race he came, what were the conditions into which he was born, what educational and social influences helped to mould his character, and what new elements Nature added to make him Ralph Waldo Emerson. Excerpt from A Bibliography of Ralph Waldo Emerson It has been thought best to group together the works edited by Emerson and those for which he wrote prefaces or introductions. This is the only exception to the chronological order of arrange ment of his single works. The single titles have been placed together in alphabetical order. The first printed form of each-poem and essay is recorded, and the more important subsequent changes. N o attempt has been made to follow each piece through the whole succession of its appearances. In this list the prose titles have been printed in roman, the poems in italic, and the titles of books in small capitals. All the articles and books of a biographical nature have been grouped together alphabetically under the name of the author or the publication in which each appeared. This includes letters and reminiscences; and the list is of a rich and varied character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Memoir of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 2 of 2 At the time of the Divinity Hall address, Emerson, as I said, was intending to lecture, the next winter, in Boston; and he persevered, though he expected that his audience would be small. When the lectures began, however, in December, there was no appearance of any deterrent effect from the address. "The lecturing [he writes to his brother William] thrives. The good city is more placable than it was represented, and forgives, like Burke, much to the spirit of liberty." The attendance was large, and of the same class of persons as before, most of them, no doubt, Liberal Christians, but of a liberality that was not disturbed by his departure from the Cambridge platform. They came, as Mr. Lowell says, to hear Emerson, not to hear his opinions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Memoir of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 1 of 2 The letters I have found less directly available than I had hoped. Emerson says of himself that he was not born under epistolary stars he did not readily communicate his feelings of the mo ment, before they were tried and sifted by reflec tion letter-writing was an effort to him, and the efiort prevented him from giving to his letters that direct impress of his personality - of the man, apart from the author - which we look to find in them. And the same thing is true to a great extent even of his journals, of which there is a full series from his college-days onward almost to the end of his life: they do not often bring us closer to him than we are brought by his published writ ings. I have been obliged to dismember and re arrange them more than I wished, and often to give their general drift in my own words, instead of simply allowing him to tell his own story. Excerpt from The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 5: Poems As was stated in the preface to the first volume of this edition of Mr. Emerson's writings, the readings adopted by him in the Selected Poems have not always been followed here, but in some cases preference has been given to corrections made by him when he was in fuller strength than at the time of the last revision.
