This thesis explores the artistic process of producing a film, All We Have is Now, that is about family and apartheid. The text traces various aspects of the film's production from the points of research, perspective, and representation. The thesis includes the multitudes of challenges and considerations when producing work about a terrible history and the barriers that have formed within the formal and informal sites of memory: the collective memories of family and society, and the national and international state and media archives. The thesis explores how one might produce artwork that is complex and free of essentializing and simplistic representations, narratives, and images of South Africa. Recurring themes within the film and thesis include: memory and forgetting; the notion of a centralizing truth; history and the present; racial segregation; cutting, editing, and creating narratives; the position, power, and intention of the author and artist as producer and presenter of narratives, images, and representations. How are representations considered South African? How are they archived, reproduced, and performed? Who gets to produce and reproduce, present and represent, play and replay imageries and imaginaries in the realms of art and the archive, and for whom, why, and to what end? The text will investigate in and through these questions and themes in an essayistic manner of unfolding vignettes. The work is ongoing. At the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, visitors confront the past upon arrival. They must decide whether to enter the museum through a door marked "whites" or another marked "non-whites." Inside, along with text, they encounter hanging nooses and other reminders of apartheid-era atrocities. In the United States, museum exhibitions about racial violence and segregation are mostly confined to black history museums, with national history museums sidelining such difficult material. Even the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture is dedicated not to violent histories of racial domination but to a more generalized narrative about black identity and culture. The scale at which violent racial pasts have been incorporated into South African national historical narratives is lacking in the U.S. Desegregating the Past considers why this is the case, tracking the production and display of historical representations of racial pasts at museums in both countries and what it reveals about underlying social anxieties, unsettled emotions, and aspirations surrounding contemporary social fault lines around race. Robyn Autry consults museum archives, conducts interviews with staff, and recounts the public and private battles fought over the creation and content of history museums. Despite vast differences in the development of South African and U.S. society, Autry finds a common set of ideological, political, economic, and institutional dilemmas arising out of the selective reconstruction of the past. Museums have played a major role in shaping public memory, at times recognizing and at other times blurring the ongoing influence of historical crimes. The narratives museums produce to engage with difficult, violent histories expose present anxieties concerning identity, (mis)recognition, and ongoing conflict.

Using the short film We Remember Differently (2005) as a focal point, this collection of essays addresses the conditions of cultural production in post-apartheid South Africa. Practiced in an apartheid context, art was strongly motivated as 'struggle art,' but in an environment more consciously informed. By revisiting history and excavating the past, the imagination must feature strongly to exercise the breath of freedom made possible in a democratic South Africa. This invitation 'to imagine' is not free from the context of history, and it is the central aspect of rethinking history that informs the making of the film. Each of the film's creative contributors reflects on the creative process and how history and memory informs their creative choices. The book also steps away from the reflexive process of producing the film as described by the cultural collaborators, and shifts the focus to address issues of reception and interpretation of the film. In offering analysis, the book's commentators describe how the imagination is still at work in hermeneutic processes, but always subject to history and memory.

In 1937 a group of young Capetonians, socialist intellectuals from the Workers’ Party of South Africa, embarked on a project they called the New Era Fellowship (NEF). In doing so they sought to disrupt and challenge not only prevailing political narratives but the very premises – class and ‘race’ – on which they were based. In different forums – public debates, lectures, study circles and cultural events – the seeds of radical thinking were planted, nurtured and brought to full flower.
