It has been proven that noise is a stressor for patients and can be detrimental to their healing process. Sleep is an important part of recovery. Sleep deprivation is a major cause for concern among health care professionals, with ICU patients being at highest risk. Nurses play a key role in developing, implementing, and disseminating changes to improve patients' sleep. A quiet environment offers a healing environment. "A review of literature providing an hour of uninterrupted rest during the day, noise levels decreased from 55% to 39%" (Boehm and Morast, 2009, pages 3). Significant research supports quiet time protocols in the Intensive Care Unit improve patient outcomes, decrease ventilator days and length of stay, and prevent the incidence of ICU delirium. However, culture change is needed to endorse such protocols. The intent of this capstone project was to provide critical care nurses with evidence-based practice and education about quiet time in the ICU environment. Invoking interest and motivation for change will assist in forming a culture that can implement and sustain a nurse driven protocol in the ICU that will overall benefit patient outcomes.

Most five-year-olds want to be firefighters, astronauts, doctors, nurses, police officers, chefs, animal doctors, but how many will actually stick to their childhood "dream"? At age five Milicent McCalla made a decision to become a nurse upon watching the "angel" nurse in the white uniform and cap care for her father in the hospital after a serious accident. As the nurse turned to leave the room, she touched Milicent on the head, and Milicent said in childlike innocence, "I am going to be a nurse like you." The nurse then said something that stuck with Milicent throughout her schooling: "You can become anything you wish as long as you study hard and keep your wishes alive." Milicent never wavered from accomplishing that dream, and after working as a registered nurse for thirty-four years in Jamaica, her native country, Canada, and the United States, she retired from a career specializing in oncology and medical-surgical nursing. With a flair for writing and humor, Milicent shares stories of her childhood, her schooling, her career, her father's wise sayings, and her faith in God in So This Is Nursing. To Milicent, caring for the sick and dying has always been her calling. And with God's help, she has done it to the best of her ability.

Jean Watson's first edition of Nursing, now considered a classic, introduced the science of human caring and quickly became one of the most widely used and respected sources of conceptual models for nursing. This completely new edition offers a contemporary update and the most current perspectives on the evolution of the original philosophy and science of caring from the field's founding scholar. A core concept for nurses and the professional and non-professional people they interact with, "care" is one of the field's least understood terms, enshrouded in conflicting expectations and meanings. Although its usages vary among cultures, caring is universal and timeless at the human level, transcending societies, religions, belief systems, and geographic boundaries, moving from Self to Other to community and beyond, affecting all of life. This new edition reflects on the universal effects of caring and connects caring with love as the primordial moral basis both for the philosophy and science of caring practices and for healing itself. It introduces Caritas Processes and provides other energetic and reflective models to assist students and practitioners in cultivating a new level of Caritas Nursing in their work and world.
