Excerpt from Ottawa the Capital On his journey up the Ottawa River he saw a waterfall near the place where the city of Ottawa now stands and its appearance suggested a curtain and thus he called it the rideau being so named in his own language, and this term still is applied to the river which is a tributary of the Ottawa. His statue stands at Nepean Point a little further up the Ottawa from the Rideau, and he is shown holding an astrolabe in his right hand, which instrument Was in his day used for scientific purposes. On his journey in this region the astrolabe was lost, but strangely enough was found under a log by a boy about two hundred and fifty years later, and is presently one Of a private collection in United States of America, which is perhaps to be regretted for it should be treasured in the Archives of Canada. Excerpt from Guide to the City of Quebec: Descriptive and Illustrated Quebec is no prosaic modern town. It is a city to be once thoroughly seen and then for ever delight fully remembered. But this cannot be done even superficially in twenty-four hours. It takes a much longer time to get acquainted with all its beauties, and all its manifold objects of historic or legend ary interest. It is only to the visitors so disposed that all the memory-haunted scenes of its mighty and glorious past unroll themselves. In fact, every stone in the walls of Quebec has a history and every spot of ground is sanctified by undying souvenirs. Excerpt from Quebec 'Twixt Old and New I am quite cognizant of the fact that there are many subjects that I have failed to notice, all more or less important and interesting, without doubt, but the facts concerning the majority of them are already known to the present generation, and be sides, the reason that several volumes would not contain the half that might be written concerning Quebec of the past, must be my excuse for not deal ing with them. Excerpt from Old Quebec: The Fortress of New France Frenchmen turned to their over - sea dominions with imaginative hope, with conviction that the great continent of promise would renew in France the glories that were Greece and the grandeur that was Rome. How hard the patriotic colonists strove to retain those territories which Champlain, La Salle, Maisonneuve, Joliet, and so many others won through nameless toil and martyrdom, and how at last the broad lands passed to another race and another flag, not by fault or folly or lack of courage of the people, but by the criminal corruption of the ruling few, is the narrative which runs through these pages.
