Nine technical papers devoted primarily to the carbides, the discovery of which has been a major event in the field of superconductors during the past five years. They also include some extended treatments and reviews relating to the mercury-based, highest-temperature superconducting material discovered to date. The specific topics include the discovery of the system, the interrelation between magnetism and superconductivity, the dependency of superconductivity and magnetism on material parameters, properties of the thin films, synthesizing and characterizing the intermetallic compound, and what the magnetic properties of mercury cuprate high-temperature superconductors reveal. This volume focuses on the topical area of magnetic superconductors. Rutheno cuprates and quaternary borocarbides are the two frontal materials forming the mainstay of the book. The authors are noted for their pioneering contribution in the field. In all, there are 6 chapters written by 18 researchers from 6 countries taking stock of frontal issues of both experiment and theory. Chapter headings: Phase Separation, Magnetism and Superconductivity in Rutheno-Cuprates; Coexistence of Superconductivity and Magnetism in R2-xCexRuSr2Cu2O10-d(R=Eu and Gd); Magneto-Superconductivity in Rutheno-Cuprates RuSr2GdCu28-d (Ru-1212) AND RuSr2(Gd0.75 Ce0.25)2Cu2O10-d (Ru-1222): A Critical Review; Therman Conductivity in Magnetic Superconductors; Magnon Specific Heat of the Antiferromagnetic Superconductors RNi2B2C [R=Tm, Er, Ho, Dy]; On the Role of the Electronic Structure in the Properties of Pseudo Quaternary Borocarbides.

Physics of High-Tc Superconductors highlights the important experiments that provide insights on the concept of high-temperature superconductors. Composed of 11 chapters, this book covers the theories and materials of these superconductors. The opening chapters of this book deal with the concepts at the cutting edge of materials science and the technical details of electron-phonon interaction calculations and their application to high-Tc superconductors. The subsequent chapters describe the various features of the atomic and electronic structure of high-Tc superconductor materials, such as quaternary, metallic, and pseudoperovskite copper oxides. These topics are followed by descriptions of the isotope effect, lattice vibrations, and optical spectra of high-Tc superconductor materials. The discussion then shifts to tunneling, relaxation, and morphological studies of these materials. The concluding chapter focuses on the superconductivity potential of bismates and thallates. Undergraduate materials science students will find this book invaluable.

In this text experts review experimental studies that directly reveal the relationship between the atomic structure and physical behavior of high-Tc superconductors. The thorough discussion centers on twins, twin boundaries, the vortex lattice, and magnetic and mechanical properties in connection with structural imperfections. Particular attention is paid to the role of the oxygen atom in the Y-Ba-Cu-O and La-Cu-O species. The experimental methods evaluated include electron and X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and M|ssbauer spectroscopy. This book makes extraordinarily valuable data obtained at the Institute of Solid State Physics at Chernogolovka accessible to the wider international community of researchers in superconductivity.

In the past two years conferences on superconductivity have been characterized by the attendance of hundreds of scientists. Consequently, the organizers were forced to schedule numerous parallel sessions and poster presentations with an almost unsurveyable amount of information. It was, therefore, felt that a more informal get-together, providing ample time for a thourough discussion of some topics of current interest in high-temperature superconductivity, was timely and benefitial for leading scientists as well as for newcomers in the field. The present volume contains the majority of papers presented at the International Discussion Meeting on High-Tc Superconductors held at the Mauterndorf Castle in the Austrian Alps from February 7 to 11, 1988. Each subject was introduced in review form by a few invited speakers and then discussed together with the contributed poster presentations. These discussion sessions chaired by selected scientists turned out to be the highlights of the meeting, not only because all the participants truly appreciated the possibility of an information exchange, but mainly because of the magnificent job done by the discussion chairmen, John A. Mydosh (Leiden), Martin Peter (Geneva) and Ken E. Gray (Argonne). First results on the just discovered Bi-superconductors and the clarification of electron resonance experiments on (123)-compounds should be mentioned in particular. The relaxed atomosphere favoring free discussions was certainly promoted by the surroundings offered in the Mauterndorf Castle, which dates back to 1253. Poster presentations and a conference banquet in historic knight's halls are certainly not found everyday in conference routines.

This essential reference provides the most comprehensive presentation of state-of-the-art research being conducting worldwide today in this growing field of research and applications. HTS are currently being supported by numerous governmental and industrial initiatives in the USA and Asia and Europe to overcome energy distribution issues and are now being commercialised for power-delivery devices, such as power transmission lines and cables, motors, and generators. Applications in electric utilities include energy-storing devices to help industries avoid dips in electric power, current limiters, and long transmission lines. The technology is particularly thought out for highly-populated and densed areas. Both editors are leading experts in the field from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This book can be used as a companion teaching tool, and also as as a research and professional reference.
