Excerpt from Public Schools and the War The following pages represent an endeavor to study the effects of the war upon schools in other countries and especi ally in the United States. The first four chapters deal with some specific problems of the public schools in connection with the war and were written when the great world con ict was still going on. They show the revolutionary changes which the public schools have made in adjusting themselves to the needs of the war, and suggest the unmistakable tendencies of our educational reconstruction which is yet to come. The last two chapters were written whentthe great war had just come to an end. In them the author has tried to show, in the light of the experience of many school systems in this country, how American public education can be reorganized in order to meet the needs of the coming new world order. It is the author's hope that they may be of some value to the general discussion of educational reform. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The um selfish, whole - heated devotion of the Assistant Superintend ents, Supervisors, Principals, teachers and children was worthy of the highest praise. From the Board of Education down to the smallest child in the kindergarten there was the most splendid cooperation. The Spirit of the Board of Education in meeting promptly every request of the Government was also the spirit of the teachers and the children in the schools. In addition to their work in the schools and with the children, the teachers rendered valuable assistance in many important wavs outside of school hours. Excerpt from War Work Activities of the Monmouth Public Schools: 1917-1918 To the Members of the Board of Education: - I am pleased to submit herewith a report of the War Work Activities of the Monmouth Public Schools for the school year ending May 31st, 1918. The information included in this bulletin is a brief summary of the reports of the teachers and Principals of the several schools. It will give you and our patrons, and all others who are interested, a general idea of what the schools are doing in patriotic service. I have only to regret that space forbids a more detailed account of this matter. It would be very instructive and inspiring to read the detailed reports of the teachers on file in the Office. The Patriotism of the schools and the Will to serve in every possible way needs no extended comment. Our teachers and pupils are 100 per cent loyal and true. They are eager to do their part. This report is evidence of their fine spirit and untiring work. This report is, therefore, intended also as an appreciation of the patriotism and service of our teachers and pupils. The work of the year has been strenuous. But in place of retarding the regular work of the schools, the War Work Activities have proved stimulating and helpful in many ways. The teachers report: "The war has marked effect upon the school and its work. All lines of work have been greatly motivated, influenced and broadened by the war activities." "Linking the War Activities with school life has greatly influenced the education of the child. Education has a deeper significance. 'Thrift and Disposition to Save' is being well developed." "The war has affected the school and its work immeasurably for good. The home and the school have been brought closer together by it. Thrift, patriotism, love and service are some of the lessons learned." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from War Letters of a Public-School Boy These laid the world away; poured out the red Sweet wine of youth; gave up the years to be Of work and joy... And those who would have been, Their sons, they gave, their immortality. Rupert Brooke. In deciding to publish some of the letters written by the late Lieutenant H. P. M. Jones during his twenty-seven months' service with the British Army, accompanying them with a memoir, I was actuated by a desire, first, to enshrine the memory of a singularly noble and attractive personality; secondly, to describe a career which, though tragically cut short, was yet rich in honourable achievement; thirdly, to show the influence of the Great War on the mind of a public-school boy of high intellectual gifts and sensitive honour, who had shone with equal lustre as a scholar and as an athlete. My choice of the title of this book was determined by the frequent allusions made by my son in his war letters to his old school. He spent six and a half years at Dulwich College. His career there was gloriously happy and very distinguished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Side Lights on the War: For Upper Grades and High Schools It is dawning upon all school authorities, and especially upon those who make the courses of study, that since this World War stands mountain high above all other events of history it must have a large and growing place in the school program. The problems of today and the magnificent way in which they are being solved constitute the most vital and stimulating material that can be put in the hands of teachers and pupils. The school boys of today are the men of tomorrow who must face the questions of the reconstruction period. Let us spend a little less time with Caesar and Napoleon and a little more with the great leaders of today with their triumphs and problems. The object of this book is to make many of these. Present questions clear and put them into convenient form for discussion in the class room. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Rome's Assault on Our Public Schools: Bane and Antidote It is a principle laid down in that magnificent document, the Declaration of Independence, drawn up in 1776, that there shall be no taxation without representation. It had been the violation of that principle on the part of the King of England that led to the achievement Of the liberties of this coun try. F or be it understood, that it was not the taxation of the colonies, but the taxation without representation that led to the war Of Independence. When, then, you support or indorse a system of this nature, you strike at the very root of constitutional liberty - you sap the very foundation on which national greatness as a. Great liberal nation repose, and so sooner or later, the evil consequences of such a proceeding are certain to be felt sooner or later the bitter fruits of such a policy are certain to be tasted. What, then, is the duty of the loyal, God-fearing Christian men Of this land? It is to make com common cause against this common enemy. It is to check by every means in their power the onward march Of the hosts of unbelief and infidelity that are now marching forward with such giant strides through the length and breadth of this great nation, and for the existence Of which the common school system is mainly responsible.
