The (potential) use of gender-inclusive language is being discussed controversially in the public sphere. Opinions on it have increasingly been voiced by individuals as well as organisations. These include state institutions, private associations, subject specialists such as linguists, and private individuals / laypeople. Views of and attitudes towards the use of gender-inclusive language cover a broad spectrum between extreme ends, and even subject specialists hold conflicting views. Research on gender-inclusive language is very much a current trend in linguistics, including the so-called ‘genderless’ languages. However, the focus is mostly on structural issues, while sociolinguistic research on attitudes towards the use of gender-inclusive language is mostly missing. Some scattered work in this area has been published, but a more thorough understanding and conceptualisation of attitudes is still needed. Furthermore, a multilingual, comparative perspective is still missing. This edited volume will address these shortcomings.

The two hypotheses that are put forward are that firstly, females are more open to gender-neutral language than males, and secondly, younger people are more open to gender-neutral language than older people. A survey was distributed through Facebook and other social media channels to gather data about the different attitudes that resulted in 146 valid answers. Furthermore, the participants were divided into four generations and the genders male, female, and divers. After comparing the different groups, the two hypotheses could both be verified.

I will begin by looking at certain false generics that are commonly used in English Language and consider the position of gender-neutral language theorists to these false generics. Due to the fact, that the gender-neutral language theory offers very general recommendations and guidelines i felt difficult to do a corpus analysis. That is why I tried to concentrate only on the main positions of gender-neutral language theory and focus on central issues within he scope of this approach. I concentrate on two particular false generics that are at the focus of gender -neutral language theory; "Man" as a generic form used in the English language to define male and female and the ambiguous use of the pronoun "He" in contexts where both sexes are to be addressed. In the second and third chapter I will take a closer look at these false generics and exemplify how they create misunderstanding and actually promote a male centred perception. In the fourth chapter I will deal with the guidelines and recommendations of language planners and gender-neutral language theorists and work out their main positions. It will be argued, that language change is not an easy undertaking but requires perseverance and consistent argumentation. The biggest challenge for language planners who want to implement genderneutral language is perhaps the persistent resistance towards the understanding, that gender - neutral language is not an issue concerning only feminists. I will conclude by evaluating the gender-neutral language theory in terms of its practicability and give a personal opinion on the approach.

Gender inequality remains an issue of high relevance, and controversy, in society. Previous research shows that language contributes to gender inequality in various ways: Gender-related information is transmitted through formal and semantic features of language, such as the grammatical category of gender, through gender-related connotations of role names (e.g., manager, secretary), and through customs of denoting social groups with derogatory vs. neutral names. Both as a formal system and as a means of communication, language passively reflects culture-specific social conditions. In active use it can also be used to express and, potentially, perpetuate those conditions. The questions addressed in the contributions to this Frontiers Special Topic include: • how languages shape the cognitive representations of gender • how features of languages correspond with gender equality in different societies • how language contributes to social behaviour towards the sexes • how gender equality can be promoted through strategies for gender-fair language use These questions are explored both developmentally (across the life span from childhood to old age) and in adults. The contributions present work conducted across a wide range of languages, including some studies that make cross-linguistic comparisons. Among the contributors are both cognitive and social psychologists and linguists, all with an excellent research standing. The studies employ a wide range of empirical methods: from surveys to electro-physiology. The papers in the Special Topic present a wide range of complimentary studies, which will make a substantial contribution to understanding in this important area.

Providing inclusive environments has become a primary tenet of modern societies. One attempt at inclusivity has been through the use of gender-inclusive language (GIL), yet little is known about its effects on relevant economic behaviors that could reduce important gender gaps in the labor market. GIL avoids the masculine "default" (common to many languages) by either explicitly mentioning both masculine and feminine (pro)nouns or by replacing them with non-gendered (pro)nouns. Here we study the causal impact of GIL on economic behaviors in the laboratory, focusing on competitiveness and leadership. We study the effect of GIL in two different language samples--English and German--which differ, among other things, in the extent to which gender is embedded linguistically. We vary GIL in instructions to participants across three treatments (total N=2,205): a masculine baseline condition (often the status quo), a condition with feminine and masculine (pro)nouns, and a condition with non-gendered (pro)nouns. We find that female-identified and male-identified participants compete, stand for leadership, and vote on leader candidates similarly across all treatments, regardless of whether or not GIL is used, in either language. Furthermore, we find no difference in female-identified and male-identified participants feeling more included in their group or, conversely, more entitled to compete or become a group leader in any of the treatments. In sum, there is a lack of support for GIL having short-term causal effects on competitive and leadership behaviors and inclusion attitudes. These findings offer practical guidance to policy-makers interested in such behaviors, and we conclude by encouraging further work on the effects of GIL on other economic and social behaviors that are less immediate and may emerge more gradually.

Jones felt offended by this term since she identified as "gender-neutral" (Andersen 2014). US$ 518,682 were adjudged to Jones as compensation money for "pronoun pain and humiliation" (Owens 2014). This lawsuit , in which a particular usage of language was punished, demonstrates how quickly the idea of a genderised language can be exaggerated and thus discredited. However, it does not mean that a language which is sensitive towards sex and gender should be abandoned for its realisation might so easily be distorted. An enlightened society is indeed in need of a language that is gender-inclusive. Yet, taking into account the case of Valeria Jones, the inevitable question must arise whether and when such a language should be enforced by law and policy. In the following paragraphs, it is to be shown that a gender-inclusive language has to be enforced (only), when its non-application causes legal consequences by excluding people from rights. In all other cases, common sense is likely to be more thoughtful an adviser. Therefore, this paper is dedicated to the practical aspects of a gender-inclusive language and its realistic implementation. Hopefully, it will have a share in reconciling the still ongoing differences between proponents and opponents of a genderised language.
