Excerpt from Protestantism Its Ultimate Principle The substance of this little volume was delivered, as a Lecture, in Exeter Hall, on March 2nd, 1874, and was repeated in the same place on March 23rd. Several friends of mine, who heard the Lecture, have requested me to print it. In complying with their request I have thrown aside some of the rhetorical accessories of the Lecture; but without re-writing it from end to end, it would have been impossible to redeem the argument from the rhetorical form which might have been allowable in a spoken address, but which is hardly suitable for a printed book. Excerpt from The Formative Principle of Protestantism Paul to the Galatians, as this book shows me to haye been. And yet I perceive that all these cogitations, brought together with so much diligence by the brethren into this book, are mine, so that I must needs confess that all, or even more, was said by'me in public lectures. For in my heart this article alone reigns, viz., the faith of Christ, from whom, through whom, and to whom my theological meditations flow and re flow continually. And yet I perceive that I have not attained to such great height, breadth, depth of wisdom; only certain weak, poor beginnings and, as it were, fragments appear. Excerpt from Protestant Principles Protestant This word has come in current use to be restricted in meaning to bearing witness against something; but the original and proper meaning is to bear witness before (the world); and the witness which we as Protestants bear is in the first place a positive witness to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ in its original simplicity and purity; but, inasmuch as the Church of Rome has departed in so many particulars from the Gospel as proclaimed by Christ and His Apostles, it is impossible to bear witness for the truth without at the same time lifting up a testimony against the errors which have obscured it. It will be Observed that from this point of view those only have a right to be regarded as Protestant who hold Evangelical doctrine. Excerpt from The Principles of Protestantism: An Examination of the Doctrinal Differences Between the Protestant Churches and the Church of Rome The chief authorities on the Protestant side are the Confessions Of the Reformed Churches; and Of these, the Augsburg Confession, the Westminster Standards, and the Articles of the Church of England, have been most frequently referred to. But particular doctrines have been illustrated from the writings, not only Of the Reformers, Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli and Calvin, but also of prominent theologians Of modern times. As a former student of the New College, Edinburgh, I could not avoid attaching great weight to the discussions Of Protestant doctrine found in the works Of Principal W. Cunningham. He is, perhaps, the only Scottish theologian that ever thoroughly mastered this field. I can conceive nothing more helpful to students than a thorough acquaintance with his supremely able lectures.
