Prostaglandin Synthesis reviews the developments in the preparation and isolation of prostaglandins by synthesis, with emphasis on the more promising and significant approaches. It includes a nomenclature of prostaglandins and considers prostaglandin analogs as well as their structure-activity relationships, prostaglandin interconversions, isomeric prostaglandins, and deoxyprostaglandins. Organized into 21 chapters, this book begins with an overview of prostaglandin biosynthesis and the potential clinical utility of prostaglandins. It then discusses the discovery of prostaglandins and the isolation of prostaglandins E and F, format for structural presentation of prostaglandins, closure of the cyclopentane ring from acyclic precursors, and conjugate addition of organometallic derivatives to alpha-substituted cyclopentenones. It explains the cyclohexane and bicyclohexane precursors, Corey's synthesis of bicyclohexane precursors, bicyclooctane and bicyclononane precursors, and approaches to synthesis of A, B, C, and D prostaglandins. This book is a valuable resource for biochemists and others working in the field of prostaglandin biosynthesis.

Download Practical Applications of Prostaglandins and their Synthesis Inhibitors Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This is the fourth in a series of books on Advances in Prostaglandin Research published by MTP Press. From laboratory and animal studies a large number of practical applications of prostaglandins have been identified. In some areas clinical trials have also been carried out. There is usually a long time interval between identifying practical applications of new drugs and clinical trials. Most of the information on practical applications of prostaglandins is scattered in different journals. Although a number of books dealing with prostaglandin research have been published (including some on practical applications in specific areas, e.g. reproduction) there is no single volume dealing with all areas of practical applications of these substances. This book aims at filling this gap and should be of interest to clinicians as well as to medical and basic scientists in academic institutions and in the pharmaceutical industry. In some areas, exciting potential applications of prostaglandins have been identified from basic research but clinical trials have so far not been carried out. Such areas of practical applications are covered in a separate intro ductory chapter. All contributors to the volume are scientists and clinicians actively engaged in prostaglandin research and most are recognized authorities in specific areas. The need for rapid publication in a fast-expanding field is obvious.

Download Prostaglandins and the Kidney Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In June, 1981, we conducted a two day international symposium in Rome devoted to original scientific presentations on arachidonic acid metabolism in the kidney. Scientists from 20 countries were represented either in the general scientific program or in the poster presentation. This book does not represent the proceedings of this international gathering, but rather the edited manuscripts specifically prepared as sum maries of the scientific presentations. We feel that the timeliness and originality of the contributions as well as the need for a compilation of existing work on prosta glandins, thromboxane, and the kidney warrant this publication. The meetings would have been impossible without the generous and substantial support of the Italian government, the National Institutes of Health, United States Public Health Service, and Merck Sharp & Dohme International. Supplementary support was also received from Ciba Geigy S. p. A., Ente Fiuggi, Farmitalia Carlo Erba S. p. A., Glaxo Laboratori S. p. A., Hoechst Italia S. p. A., Leo Pharmaceutical Products, Pfizer Italiana S. p. A., Sigm? Tau S. p. A., Squibb S. p. A., The Upjohn Company, Wellcome Italia S. p. A., and Burroughs Wellcome Company. The efficient organization of the symposium was largely attributable to the superb efforts of Elisabeth Mutschlechner and Miki Scarinci of C.K. International, Rome. Linda Goldberg provided expert and invaluable editorial and secretarial assistance in the organization of this book. The book is divided into four major sections comprising: I.

Download Prostaglandins and Thromboxanes Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Prostaglandins and Thromboxanes explores the two members of the prostanoid class of fatty acid. This book attempts to thoroughly discuss the topic after collecting enough information through research in physical and biological sciences. As the title suggests, the book revolves around prostaglandins and thromboxanes. The book's first chapter contains a discussion on the subject's history, stating the year of discovery and crediting the scientist who coined the names. The chapter ends talking about the possible uses of prostaglandins and thromboxanes in the clinic. The chapters that follow discuss the two lipids' basic and advanced synthesis, pharmacology, biosynthesis, biological activity, chemical interconversions, and metabolism, along with its subtopics. The book will serve as an excellent reference for undergraduate and graduate students in the related field.

Download Prostaglandins: Chemical and Biochemical Aspects Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This is the second in a series of three books on advances in prostaglandin research. In recent years there has been an unparalleled interest in these compounds and as a result a vast amount of research data has accumulated since the publication of my earlier book in 1972. At that time it was possible to present a fairly comprehensive review of the various aspects of prosta glandin research in one volume. This is no longer possible and the contents are divided into three volumes; the first one dealing with prostaglandins and reproduction was published in October 1975; the present volume dealing with chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research, to be published in April 1976 and the third book dealing with physiological, pharmacological and pathological aspects of prostaglandin research wiII be published in May 1976. The authorship represents international scientists consisting of physiolo-. gists, pharmacologists, chemists, biochemists, veterinary scientists and obstetrician gynaecologists actively engaged in different areas of prosta glandin research. An attempt has been made to provide a total coverage of advances relating to prostaglandins. For the sake of completeness and continuity, material covered in the 1972 book is either briefly summarised or reference made to that edition. In recent years there have been notable advances in the chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research and these are discussed by various authorities in the chapters that follow.

Download The Prostaglandin System Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Prostaglandin research is one of the most explosive fields in the biological science, and there have been a number of international symposia on this subject. In planning the second Advanced Course in Erice (Sicily) at the "Ettore Majorana" center it was realized that large congresses might not represent the best way to facilitate communication within specialized areas of biologic and medical research. In fact small meetings where in depth discussion is confined to a limited number of scientists, are now generally considered successful vehicles of scientific information. With this in mind, we made an effort in collecting a number of experts in both experimental and clinical use of these important arachidonate metabolites. We have been very fortunate in bringing together a faculty of international authorities who contributed to the course with brilliant presentations and lively discussion. Thus, this book represents an up-to-date overview of the physiology and pharmacology of different products derived from arachidonic acid metabolism, associated with outstanding suggestions of their clinical potential. It is our hope that from this Advanced Course, and its resulting publication, new ideas concerning the physio pathological role of these compounds will arise together with new directions for future research. We are deeply indebted to NATO for its interest and generous support which made this Second Course a reality.

Download Prostaglandins in Cancer Research Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Arachidonic acid metabolites are known to playa regulatory role in a number of biological systems, in which they function as microenviron mental hormones and intracellular signal mediators. One of the most exciting areas of research of these compounds is the one that studies the relationship between prostaglandins and tumor cell growth and function. In the last few years there has been an extraordinary evolution of data on prostaglandins (and related compounds) and cancer. This vol ume is based on papers presented at the 1986 International Confer ence on Prostaglandins and Cancer organized by the Italian National Research Council and the II University of Rome, and held in Rome, Italy, in June, 1986. This Conference brought together oncologists and specialists in the areas of prostaglandin chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, cellular and molecular biology to overview the actual state of knowledge on the role of eicosanoids in cancer and to focus on the key questions that need to be answered. The picture that comes out of this book describes a very complicated network of interactions between arachidonic acid metabolites and different as pects of the complex phenomenon "cancer". Eicosanoids participate in carcinogenesis initiation and promotion, and their relationship with tumor promoters and growth factors is well established. During cancer growth, different prostaglandins can have different roles in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation and in metastasis formation; meanwhile evidence is accumulating for a pos sible use of some of these compounds as antineoplastic agents.
