Excerpt from Prospects for Agriculture in the Caribbean Agricultural policies in the Caribbean are concerned with reducing food imports by increasing local production of food and with increasing production of export crops. It should be recognized at the outset that increasing local food production may not be the best way of increasing real income in the region. The possible alternative methods of providing a region with its food supply must ultimately include trade with other regions. If all factors are considered, it may turn out that various degrees of dependency on other regions for food imports in exchange for either agricultural or other goods and services may be to the best advantage of a given region. Furthermore, increasing agricultural production for export either through increased yields or expanded acreage may not necessarily be the best use of resources, even when there is idle land available with agricultural potential. Resources required to increase yields or bring new land into production may be able to earn a greater return in other uses. This publication summarizes the agricultural policy analyses conducted in nine Caribbean countries (Suriname, Guyana, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Belize, Barbados, The Bahamas, and Trinidad and Tobago) in the framework of the IDB’s Agrimonitor initiative. The document discusses how agricultural policies affect producers and consumers as well as how the limited funding for agricultural services, such as research and infrastructure, could limit the ability of Caribbean farmers to compete effectively in global markets. The analyses presented are therefore meant to contribute to the Caribbean’s regional dialogue for the design of more effective agricultural policies, which will be able to strengthen the sector and improve the lives of people in the region.

Primary Agriculture is an integral part of the school curriculum in most countries of the Caribbean. This revised edition of the Caribbean Primary Agriculture series provides technological updating of the various units and topics which are comprehensively sequenced and graded to suit the various age groups and class levels of the primary school. An awareness of ecology, safety and the economic framework is an important part of the new material, which includes newly drawn pictures, both black and white and full colour. The Scientific Discovery Approach is used, so that students can find solutions to problems both by their own investigations and with guidance from the teacher.
