Excerpt from Proposed Fiscal Year 2010 Budget Request for the National Park Service: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on National Parks of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, United States Senate, One Hundred Eleventh Congress; June 16, 2009 The National Park Service received $750 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This provides the National Park Service with a unique opportunity to make investments in projects that will achieve long-term ben efits for the public. We plan to use these funds to complete approximately 800 much-needed projects that will stimulate our economy, provide jobs in communities across the nation, and benefit millions of visitors that come to our parks each year. The nps will begin economic recovery projects at 107 national parks in the next 100 days. Also, $15 million In grants will go to protecting and to restoring buildings at historically black colleges and universities. These projects fall under six major categories that will allow us to make invest ments in some of our irreplaceable assets by restoring facilities, landscapes and habitat, spurring renewable energy retrofits in parks, and creating jobs in park units throughout our country.
