The Project Independence Evaluation System (PIES) provides the Federal Energy Administration's major mid-to long-term energy forecasting and analysis capability. It consists of a number of complex interrelated computer models and associated data bases which can be used to project the state of the energy market in the years 1980, 1985, and 1990. By varying assumptions and data, the user can define alternative scenarios for the analysis of alternative energy issues. The purpose of this document is to provide a potential PIES user with a description of how PIES operates with particular emphasis on the possible variations in assumptions and data that can be made in specifying alternative scenarios.
