In the Soviet Union, investigations of electrochemical changes in organic substances are being conducted on a comparatively large scale and a large number of specialists are involved. This arises to a large extent from the necessity to solve problems in the applied fields, e.g. in the development of new improved methods for the analysis and synthesis of organic compounds or in the work on fuel cells. The attainment of substantial successes in this field has been linked inseparably with a deeper understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of electrolytic organic reactions and the utilization of modem research methods based on the latest achievements in instrumentation. The theory of organic electrode processes is therefore now developing rapidly. However, the propagation of information on this work has been relatively slow. The Series of reports on Progress in Electrochemistry of Organic Compounds should stimulate systematic treatment and propagation of information in this field of science. It is proposed that each volume of the series will be compiled on the same lines as the book Advances in Electrochemistry of Organic Compounds published by Nauka in 1966. They will form collections of original review articles on the most important aspects of the subject, prepared by competent authorities.

IMRET 5 featured more than 80 oral and poster communications, covering the entire interdisciplinary field from design, production, modeling and characterization of microreactor devices to application of microstructured systems for production, energy and transportation, including many analytical and biological applications. A particularly strong topic was the investigation of the potential of microstructuring of reactors and systems components for process intensification. Perspectives of combining local, in situ, data acquisition with appropriate microstructuring of actuators and components within chemical and biological devices were explored in order to enhance process performance and facilitate process control.

Electrochemical reactions make significant contributions to organic synthesis either in the laboratory or on an industrial scale. These methods have the potential for developing more "green" chemical synthesis. Over recent years, modern investigations have clarified the mechanisms of important organic electrochemical reactions. Progress has also been made in controlling the reactivity of intermediates through either radical or ionic pathways. Now is the time to gather all the electrochemical work into a textbook. As an essential addition to the armory of synthetic organic chemists, electrochemical reactions give results not easily achieved by many other chemical routes. This book presents a logical development of reactions and mechanisms in organic electrochemistry at a level suited to research scientists and final year graduate students. It forms an excellent starting point from which synthetic organic chemists, in both academia and industry, can appreciate uses for electrochemical methods in their own work. The book is also a reference guide to the literature.

Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.

Advances in Physical Organic Chemistry provides the chemical community with authoritative and critical assessments of the many aspects of physical organic chemistry. The field is a fast developing one, with results and methodologies finding application from biology to solid state physics. The previous volumes in this serial constitute a lasting record of this field and will continue to do so as they are widely used and cited. The serial has maintained high levels of quality and utility over the years. Volume 35, devoted to the study of carbocations and free radicals, includes contributions on excess acidities, the relationship between structure and organic reactivity, electron transfer, bond-breaking and formation, donor/acceptor organizations, and the electron-transfer paradigm for organic reactivity. Readers will also benefit from the comprehensive subject and citation index.
