The research fund for coal and steel was established 2002 to support the competitiveness of the European Coal and Steel sectors by supporting research, pilot and demonstration projects. This brochure contains a small selection of running and closed projects which highlight some of the innovative and research related activities supported by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel since 2002. In accordance with the legal basis of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (Council Decision 2008/376/EC) the Commission shall carry out a monitoring exercise of the Research Programme and an assessment exercise of the projects closed over a period of 7 years (2003 to 2010) in order to identify benefits to the sectors and to society in general. A more detailed assessment of a larger set of projects will be published in 2013 covering the projects which formed the basis of the assessment exercise which will conclude before the end of 2012.
