Abstract: The purpose of this project is to highlight the challenges and opportunities for Informal Science Institutions (ISIs), such as museums, science centers, zoos, aquaria, and similar organizations in partnering with and training formal classroom teachers on best practices in science education for elementary students. This project is based on a specific case study on professional development developed to support Los Angeles-area teachers for grades Kindergarten through Fifth grade (K-5) in the transition to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). ISIs are in a unique place to support the transition to the NGSS by providing professional development opportunities and experiences that combine the best of both formal classroom and out-of-school-time learning. This project outlines a methodology for developing and implementing professional development programs at ISIs that address the needs of elementary teachers teaching science in the classroom.
