This paper presents a model of the causes and consequences of managers' decisions to design and manufacture key components internally (vertical integration), or to outsource them (vertical disintegration). Through a study of patterns of integration and dis-integration in the rigid disk drive industry, this paper suggests a causal model of the drivers of vertical disintegration. ... The rigid disk drive industry has undergone several cycles of vertical integration and disintegration, in which the industry leadership and locus of rents changed with each cycle, triggered by swings in the dominant architecture between integrality and modularity. These swings had a profound impact on the structure of the industry, on the sources of competitive advantage within it, and on the stages of value-added in which attractive profits could be earned. In addition, the paper shows that the motivation to create technological modularity can often be self-reversing and repetitive suggesting that in many industries, we should expect the pendulum of competitive advantage to swing back and forth between vertically integrated and non-integrated firms.
