The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded, largely due to the driving energy of Michiel Hazewinkel on the 14th April, 1986 in Neustadt-Mussbach in West Germany. The founder signatories were A. Bensoussan (INRIA, Paris), A. Fasano (University of Florence), M. Hazewinkel (CWI, Amsterdam), M. Heilio (Lappeenranta University, Finland), F. Hodnett (University of Limerick, Ireland), H. Martens (Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim), S. McKee (University of Strathclyde, Scotland), H. NeURzert (University of Kaiserslautern, Germany), D. Sundstrom (The Swedish Institute of Applied Mathematics, Stockholm), A. Tayler (University of Oxford, England) and Hj. Wacker (University of Linz, Austria). The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry is dedicated to: (a) promote the use of mathematical models in Industry (b) educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts (c) operate on a European scale. ECMI is still a young organisation but its membership is growing fast. Although it has still to persuade more industrialists to join, ECMI certainly operates on a European scale and a flourishing postgraduate programme with student exchange has been underway for some time. It is perhaps fitting that the first open meeting of ECMI was held at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Glasgow is and was the industrial capital of Scotland and was, and arguably still is, Britain's second city after London; when this volume appears it will have rightly donned the mantle of the cultural capital of Europe.

The Fourth ECMI Conference on Industrial Mathematics took place at Strobl in Aus tria, May 29-June 2, 1989. The conference was devoted to the exchange of ideas, models and methods from various fields of industrial applications of mathematics. About 140 people from 21 countries attended the meeting. The aim was to bring together peo ple from industry and from university. In this respect the organizers were only partly successful!. The participance of about 20 people from industry shows that there is still much work to be done to increase the acceptance from this side. 72 speakers presented their results as invited or contributed lectures, or in the frame of 2 minisymposia. One minisymposium was organized by Heinz W. Engl and focused on steel processing, the other one, organized by Hansjorg Wacker, dealt with chemical engineering. These proceedings consist of 56 papers. The articles within each of the sections: Invited Lectures, Minisymposium Steel Processing, Minisymposium Chemical Engi neering, and Contributed Lectures are in alphabetical order of the first author. Exept for the contributions to the minisymposia, which clearly concentrate on the corre sponding topics, it is hard to find a reasonable classification of the papers . This, we believe, is typical for industrial mathematics and underlines the vast variety of fields where mathematics could be used to support problem solving. We would like to acknowlegde the valuable work of the referees of the articles who certainly helped to improve the quality of this volume.

"Mathematics in Industry" - since the volume containing the proceedings of the 1985 Oberwolfach conference was published*), this subject has become more fashionable in Europe, America and also in the third world. The Europeans have come closer to each other: They formed a European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry, abbreviated ECMI. This ECMI supported mainly by mathematicians from Amsterdam, Bari, Eindhoven, Firenze, Kaiserslautem, Limerick, Linz, Paris, Oxford and Trondheim has become a legal entity with a rapidly growing number of members. It has organized a common, really European postgraduate programme, establishes contact between industry and universities and organizes other confer ences everywhere in the world. Industrial mathematics is a special method to get interesting problems; a special attitude of curiosity for technical or economical questions; a general rather broad knowledge in all branches of mathematics; but it always remains real mathematics. Our first proceedings contained many articles about "why and how to start". Now we are more selfconfident about our ideas: These proceedings include only exam ples of "how to do". It is a pleasure to see how many different kinds of good mathematics are applied to so many different problems from industry. Part of the selection criteria for this volume was that some of the applications of what is usually considered ivory tower mathematics be represented.

The Fifth European Conference on Industrial Mathematics (ECMI 90) took place at Lahti, Finland on June 6-9, 1990. The conference was organised by the Rolf Nevanlinna Institute together with the Lahti Research and Training Centre of the University of Helsinki. Like its predecessors the Lahti meeting was devoted to the exchange of experience, ideas and methods from various fields of industrial mathematics. The series of ECMI conferences have clearly established an important forum of interaction between the advancing front of technology and one of its crucial development resources, modern applications-oriented mathematics. The precise title of the conferences has been the subject of some discussion and it has been argued that there is no such area which can be labelled as "industrial mathematics". This is certainly true if one thinks only in terms of the range of ideas, theorems, methods and algorithms constituting mathematics all of which may be applied. However with another viewpoint industrial mathematics is not a collection of topics but refers to the interactive process in which mathematics, the science, meets the real world of applications. Ideally this interaction involves both good mathematics and technological advance. The computer revolution has created a new era in technology with the increased computational capability to simulate complex industrial processes, devices, and other technolog making it possible ical systems. This simulation depends on mathematical modelling and analysis and these techniques, sometimes ingenious but often quite routine, have provided a powerful tool for industrial scientists and creative research management.

This monograph focuses on the mathematical modeling of distributed parameter systems in which mass/energy transport or wave propagation phenomena occur and which are described by partial differential equations of hyperbolic type. The case of linear (or linearized) 2 x 2 hyperbolic systems of balance laws is considered, i.e., systems described by two coupled linear partial differential equations with two variables representing physical quantities, depending on both time and one-dimensional spatial variable. Based on practical examples of a double-pipe heat exchanger and a transportation pipeline, two typical configurations of boundary input signals are analyzed: collocated, wherein both signals affect the system at the same spatial point, and anti-collocated, in which the input signals are applied to the two different end points of the system. The results of this book emerge from the practical experience of the author gained during his studies conducted in the experimental installation of a heat exchange center as well as from his research experience in the field of mathematical and computer modeling of dynamic systems. The book presents valuable results concerning their state-space, transfer function and time-domain representations, which can be useful both for the open-loop analysis as well as for the closed-loop design. The book is primarily intended to help professionals as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students involved in modeling and automatic control of dynamic systems.

The sixth European Conference on Mathematics in Industry (ECMI 91) took place at Limerick, Ireland during August 27-31, 1991. This series of ECMI Conferences is clearly satisfying the need to provide a forum, in a European wide context, for the presentation of material related to the application of mathematics to industrial problems. The result, at Limerick, was the presence of approximately 170 delegates representing most countries of Western and Eastern Europe (with a small number from the U. S. and Canada) participating in this information exchange on a wide range of types of problems. The only identifiable common characteristic of the presentations was the element of application of mathematics to an industrially related problem. The conference programme consisted of 8 invited lectures with approximately 80 contributed papers. These proceedings consist of 7 invited lectures and 63 contributed papers. The range of topics is very wide including areas such as optical fibres, biomechanics, electric power optimization, heat conduction, cryptography, catalytic reactors, dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids, fluid dynamics in a variety of applications, continuing education, epidemiology, numerical methods and software, optimal control, robotics etc. It is not possible to group the presentations under identifiable topic areas and the contents have therefore been organized in sections devoted to the invited lectures and the contributed papers. Within the contributed papers there are two small subsections devoted to (a) industrial design and (b) mathematical education for industry. In each section papers are listed in alphabetical order by name of first author.
