As this difficult genus was never before monographed, a revisional study was much needed. The data presented are mainly based on the study of herbarium specimens and in some cases of living ones. The picture was completed, as far as possible, with data from various literature sources. A short survey is given of the taxonomic history of Origanum, which goes back as far as Linnaeus, and shows that genus and species concepts of various authors have much differed. A morphological outline of Origanum is given, from which it can be concluded that most generic characters are rather variable. Origanum is characterized in the following ways. Medium sized, subshrubby Labiatae, rich in volatile oils, with subsessile, ovate, glandular punctate leaves and paniculate inflorescences; few flo wered verticillasters arranged in (dense) spikes with distinct, often coloured, bracts; calyces variable: 5-toothed, subregular or 2-lipped or I-lipped, with developed or reduced teeth; corollas 2-lipped, sometimes saccate or flattened.

This proceedings is a collection of 46 selected papers that were presented at the 12th International Wheat Genetics Symposium (IWGS). Since the launch of the wheat genome sequencing project in 2005, the arrival of draft genome sequences has marked a new era in wheat genetics and genomics, catalyzing rapid advancement in the field. This book provides a comprehensive review of the forefront of wheat research, across various important topics such as germplasm and genetic diversity, cytogenetics and allopolyploid evolution, genome sequencing, structural and functional genomics, gene function and molecular biology, biotic stress, abiotic stress, grain quality, and classical and molecular breeding. Following an introduction, 9 parts of the book are dedicated to each of these topics. A final, 11th part entitled “Toward Sustainable Wheat Production” contains 7 excellent papers that were presented in the 12th IWGS Special Session supported by the OECD. With rapid population growth and radical climate changes, the world faces a global food crisis and is in need of another Green Revolution to boost yields of wheat and other widely grown staple crops. Although this book focuses on wheat, many of the newly developed techniques and results presented here can be applied to other plant species with large and complex genomes. As such, this volume is highly recommended for all students and researchers in wheat sciences and related plant sciences and for those who are interested in stable food production and food security.

This book examines the development of innovative modern methodologies towards augmenting conventional plant breeding, in individual crops, for the production of new crop varieties under the increasingly limiting environmental and cultivation factors to achieve sustainable agricultural production, enhanced food security, in addition to providing raw materials for innovative industrial products and pharmaceuticals. This Volume 5, subtitled Cereals, focuses on advances in breeding strategies using both traditional and modern approaches for the improvement of individual crops. It addresses important staple food crops including barley, fonio, finger millet, foxtail millet, pearl millet, proso millet, quinoa, rice, rye, tef, triticale and spelt wheat. The volume is contributed by 53 internationally reputable scientists from 14 countries. Each chapter comprehensively reviews the modern literature on the subject and reflects the authors own experience.

Our understanding of the function and structure of chromosomes and their interrelationship has grown in recent years. The chapters in this issue describe the advances that have been made possible by combining microscope techniques with sophisticated biochemical and genetic approaches to unlock the secrets of chromosomes. The authors look at many aspects of chromosome biology, such as protein, DNA and RNA composition of chromosomes, defined chromosome structures, unusual chromosome structures and specialized chromosomes and microscope tools for chromosome analysis. 'Chromosome Structure and Function' will be an invaluable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students in fields such as plant and animal sciences, genetics, and molecular biology. In fact, any student, teacher or researcher interested in chromosome biology will find this special issue indispensable.

This book provides an overview of the latest advancements in the field of alien introgression in wheat. The discovery and wide application of molecular genetic techniques including molecular markers, in situ hybridization, and genomics has led to a surge in interspecific and intergeneric hybridization in recent decades. The work begins with the taxonomy of cereals, especially of those species which are potential gene sources for wheat improvement. The text then goes on to cover the origin of wheat, breeding in connection with alien introgressions, and the problems of producing intergeneric hybrids and backcross derivatives. These problems can include crossability, sterility, and unequal chromosome transmission. The work then covers alien introgressions according to the related species used, as well as new results in the field of genomics of wild wheat relatives and introgressions.

The agricultural sector of medicinal (including plant stimulants) and aromatic plants is characterized by an enormous number and diversity of species. Only a few of them can be considered cultivated crops in which significant breeding efforts are made. For most species, however, breeding is performed in short-term projects only. Therefore, basic knowledge about these species is still fragmentary. Our intention is to compile and organize the available information on the most commonly utilized plant species into one publication, thereby providing a standardized resource for the researchers and the grower community. This book therefore provides reference source materials for a wide variety of plant species used for human consumption due to their flavor, medicinal or recreational properties. It is divided into a section of general topics on genetic resources, breeding adaptation of analytic methods and a compilation of basic data for DNA content, chromosome number and mating system followed by a section of 20 monographs on a species or species groups.

Micropropagation through an in vitro culture technique is a reliable biotechnological tool that holds a better scope and future for the propagation of numerous economically prominent ornamentals, including those having value in the foliage and flowering plants industry. As a lucrative alternative approach to conventional propagation, micropropagation is a highly refined, well-developed and suitable method to produce a large scale of progeny plants which are genetically identical to the stock plant in a short time. Micropropagation of ornamental plants is increasingly and continuously involved in the scientific progress of plant biotechnology and has a relevant horticultural impact. Accordingly, a new book on micropropagation of ornamental plants is always required. Microprpagation of Ornamental Plants: Research and Practice consists of nine chapters divided into four sections authored by experienced and prestigious authors from different parts of the globe. The editor and authors are recognized as eminent scientists in their fields, and they add the quality and credibility to the content. Each chapter is illustrated and attempts to convey the practical as well as the theoretical aspects of microproparagtion. This anthology combines smartly refined micropropagation protocols of a considerable number of economically important ornamental species. Furthermore, the book will serve as a reference for horticulturists, researchers, lecturers, and students in horticulture, agriculture and biotechnology.
