Excerpt from Proceedings of the Bostonian Society, at the Annual Meeting, January 10, 1893 Local pride actuates us to a certain degree in carrying out, as far as lies in our power, the Objects of the Bostonian Society To promote the study of the history of Boston and preserve its antiquities. We all know that the early history of Boston is an impor tant chapter in the history of the founders of the Great Repub lic, and the establishment of those principles of civil and religious liberty that we now enjoy. The preservation of such antiquities as can be preserved without materially inter tering with the march Of progress is of advantage, as has been frequently demonstrated, in keeping visible mementoes to perpetuate and emphasize important events that have influence upon the progress of the city or the nation. As this Society increases in years, the importance Of its work and the influence it can exert become more evident. It is not only important that we may continually recall and keep alive the early history of Boston, and the events that occurred here leading to national independence, but the history subsequent to that event, down to our own times. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Bostonian Society at the Annual Meeting, January 10, 1899 The student of the past is frequently puzzled by the former names of streets which have in later days been changed or modernized, if the expression may be allowed, while others within the past fifty years have passed out of existence owing to the widening of some and the extension of others. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Bostonian Society: At the Annual Meeting, January 10, 1888 The Seventh Annual Meeting of the Bostonian Society was held in the Council Chamber, Old State House, on Tuesday, January 10, 1888, at 3 P. M., the President, Curtis Guild, in the chair. The records of the last meeting were read and approved. After the election of new members, the President addressed the Society as follows: - President Guilds Address. Fellow Members of the Bostonian Society: It has been my privilege, as well as my satisfaction, to congratulate you each succeeding year since we have occupied these Memorial Halls, upon the progress and success of our organization. Any organization, however, which would use its best efforts to faithfully carry out the objects of this Society would be sure of the encouragement of all who have the best interests of this city at heart, and more especially of those who were born in Boston, have been educated in her institutions of learning, and gained success in business within her limits. The history of one's birthplace, the biography and record of those who have increased it in wealth or added to its commercial importance and industry, - whether it be of predecessors or contemporaries, - the recollection of the scenes of our younger days where youth's first aspirations, hopes and ambitions were formed, clings to the man in maturer years.
