Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Homoeopathy Cut off suddenly in the very flower of his age and at the height of his intellectual ability, he had not completed more than one-half of the task of correcting the proof-sheets of this colossal work. But fortunately the whole of the manuscript was in the printer's hands, so that the work is complete just as it would have appeared had its author lived to see it through the press. His family having confided to me the labour of love to complete the task its author was destined to leave unfinished, I have scrupulously avoided making any alterations or additions to the author's text. My task has been confined to proof-cor roeting and index-making, so that the reader may be assured that he has the work exactly as it would have been under the author's own superintendence. Excerpt from Homeopathic Principles and Practice of Medicine Another school, that Of the Astrologists, claimed to be guided by stars in the diagnosis Of disease and in the selection Of remedies, and SO popular was the theory, that it maintained its ground for many centuries against argument and ridicule. Probably the natural tendency of mankind to mystery had much to do towards keeping up this delusion. Besides, it flattered the self love Of men to believe that the stars in their courses watched over them, and that their health and sickness, their prosperity and adversity, were so intimately blended with the motions and positions of these celestial bodies. A practice which prevailed in the first centuries Of the Christian Era deserves a passing mention; namely, the impo sitiou Of hands and anointing with Oil by the elders Of the church as a means of cure for the sick. It was sanctioned and even commanded by the Apostle James, was practiced for several centuries, but finally fell into disuse except when occasionally revived by some enthusiast or 'charlatan, who claims to have Obtained this power. Excerpt from Principles of Homeopathy: In a Series of Lectures There is another class of unbelievers which, from the nature of the case, must embrace some of the foregoing class. It consists of those who are regarded as eminent in the medical profession: They are rich in honours and emoluments. Their circumstances naturally give them a strong bias against innovation. Excerpt from Homeopathy and Its Principles Explained Chap. I. Which the truth, by the very necessity of its nature, either must, or appears likely to, overturn; and, That truth has ultimately triumphed. In regard to the first axiom, that truth has been discovered AT distinct and often distant intervals, do not the facts, that the world has existed so many hundreds of years, and that, though so much truth has been discovered, so much remains un discovered, testify to the soundness of this axiom? This axiom does not imply that truth was ever imperfect. It came perfect from the Divine mind, and exists in the universe in all its glorious perfection. Even ancient mythology teaches this, when it in its poetic relation declares, that Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, came forth from the brain of the mythological chief god Jupiter, fully formed and perfectly armed; a relation vividly testifying to the belief among the philosophers of Olden times in the, as origi nally created, perfection of truth. In reference to the essential perfection of truth, and, at the same time, its gradual discovery by man at distinct and Often distant intervals, how appropriate are the beautiful imagery and the forcible language Of Milton, in his speech for the liberty Of unlicensed printing, addressed to the parliament Truth indeed came into the world with her Divine Master, and was a perfect shape, most glorious to look upon; but when he ascended, then straight arose a wicked race of deceivers, who took the virgin truth, hewed her lovely form into a thousand pieces, and scattered them to the four winds. From that time ever since, the sad friends Of truth, such as durst appear, went up and down, gathering up limb by limb still as they could find them. We have not found them all, lords and commons, nor ever shall do, till her Master's second coming: he shall bring together every joint and member, and shall, mould them into an immortal feature Of loveliness and perfection.
