Agreement of Knox and Duer to purchase lands in the District of Maine from the state of Massachusetts. Written in Duer's hand. The major stipulations include: an equal stake in the investment for both parties, a desire to pay only 12 cents per acre in no less than five annual installments, that only Knox and Duer are directors of this purchase with William Constable being given the option to join them during a six-month period after the purchase, and that Henry Jackson and Royal Flint are to serve as agents for the purchase. Goes on to provide stipulations that subordinate parties will have to abide by if they invest in this purchase. Duer's own signature is at the bottom of page 5, along with his copied signatures of Henry Knox, Henry Jackson, and John Lane.

This document is in the hand of William Duer, but the last sentence on page 3 is written by Knox, who also signed it. States that Duer and Knox accede to the forming of a French colony on their land in Maine, probably in reference to Madame de la Val and Mr. de la Roche's inquiries. Proclaims a need for the boundaries of the colony to be precise. The two parties still need to describe the number of rations that need to be purchased and their price, the number and size of the houses to be built, and the price of the land. Reports that The Subscriber is of Opinion that a Vessell from New York to the lands in question will not be necessary, as enough ships make frequent trips along the coast already. The ultimate agreement is to be drawn immediately after the lands have been viewed and approved.

Hopes Duer received the maps and that he will be in Boston with Royal Flint by 14 August. Says the committee will be together to collect the [dollar sign] 5,000 and it will be an excellent opportunity on the payment of that sum to commence the negociation for the additional million, and the conditional agreement to be extend[ed]. States much of their future depends upon the punctual payment of the [dollar sign] 5,000. The letter to Walker says he has enclosed a letter for Duer (this is what is on page 1-2). Relates that the first payment of the Massachusetts land is due. Wants to know if Flint's maps have arrived. Docketed by Knox.

This is a copy of the legal agreement negotiated by Henry Jackson and Royal Flint as agents for Henry Knox and William Duer for two million acres of land in the District of Maine, sold by a committee of the Massachusetts General Court. The names of the seller are left blank while the buyers are noted as Henry Jackson & Royal Flint for themselves and associates. The document is divided into ten articles and proclaims that the buyers are getting a price of ten cents per acre to be payable in nine payments for a total of [Dollar sign]243,802. Stipulates that the buyers need to get 2,500 settlers to move to the lands in twelve years and that they will need to pay thirty dollars of the six percent stock of the United States for each person if there is a deficient number of settlers. Date of 1 July added later in pencil, though June is listed in the body of the document. See GLC02437.05049 for Henry Jackson's letter to Henry Knox concerning this agreement.
