This volume reproduces, for the first time, the complete death records of Highland County, Virginia from the beginning in 1853 until the end of 1898-two years after Virginia counties were relieved of that obligation! This volume also incorporates twenty-seven years (1871-1898) of death records hidden from public view and use for about forty years. A complete reproduction of the entire death record entries can be found on these pages; this is not a book of abstracts. These records generally include: full name of the deceased; sex and race (white or colored); date and place of death, cause of death; age; names of parents, spouse, and informant; place of birth (generally county); marital status; and occupation. Readers will appreciate the list of archaic and obscure medical terms that were recorded as the cause of death. This list provides the modern definitions of these old medical terms. A full name index adds to the value of this work.

A Genealogist's Refresher Course is less a how-to book than a collection of first-hand experiences, do's and don'ts, and privileged information. One of the most valuable chapters in the book contains a list of nearly 100 different kinds of sources of genealogical information, including anniversary announcements, bank statements, business licenses, memorial cards, health records, medals, newspaper clippings, subpoenas, and many other record categories that genealogists may fail to consult. Still other chapters discuss how to acquire rare or used books and when and how to hire a professional genealogist. In a word, this is a unique genealogy refresher course!

This book contains all the death records gathered by the Bureau of Vital Statistics for King George County during the period 1853 to 1896. This collection of abstracts includes the name of the deceased and the date of his or her death, cause of death, age at the time of death, parents, birthplace, spouse, and the informant's name and relationship to the deceased. In addition, slave deaths were sometimes recorded by their masters. The information was copied as it appeared in the original records; however, when the author found the discrepancies too obvious to ignore she included short editor's notes. Each record is listed in the order in which it appeared; page and line numbers corresponding to the original documents are given.
