Excerpt from Preliminary Studies in Bridge Design: Being the First of a Series of Small Volumes, Each Complete in Itself, Dealing With the Design of Ordinary Highway Bridges of Moderate Spans This book is a reprint of a series of articles under the same title which appeared in The Surveyor and Municipal and County Engineer early in 1912. It used to be the custom to begin the preface to a technical or professional work with a more or less elaborate justification for its existence and some discussion of the ground covered by similar works. Nowadays it is more usual simply to put forward a book on its merits, regardless of whether the ground is otherwise covered or not. Sometimes the author is determined to "cut in," depending upon his publisher to find a sufficiently large public; and in this he is not always to be blamed, for many of the other books on his subject may be largely of the nature of compilations, while others are out of print, so that the extent to which the ground is actually covered by books which are readily obtainable cannot easily be ascertained. The responsibility must, in fact, be thrown upon the shoulders of the reviewers. It is sometimes the case, however, that the author of a book, building up his arguments on basic principles, and conscious of a powerful impetus, knows that what he produces is not tainted with plagiarism or stuffed with compilation: it may be good or it may be bad, but such as it is it is sufficiently original to be considered on its merits. It is hoped that Preliminary Studies In Bridge Design may be regarded as a work of this character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A comprehensive guide to bridge design Bridge Design - Concepts and Analysis provides a unique approach, combining the fundamentals of concept design and structural analysis of bridges in a single volume. The book discusses design solutions from the authors’ practical experience and provides insights into conceptual design with concrete, steel or composite bridge solutions as alternatives. Key features: Principal design concepts and analysis are dealt with in a unified approach. Execution methods and evolution of the static scheme during construction are dealt with for steel, concrete and composite bridges. Aesthetics and environmental integration of bridges are considered as an issue for concept design. Bridge analysis, including modelling and detail design aspects, is discussed for different bridge typologies and structural materials. Specific design verification aspects are discussed on the basis of present design rules in Eurocodes. The book is an invaluable guide for postgraduate students studying bridge design, bridge designers and structural engineers.
