This project consists of a cultural resources survey and assessment of approximately 1,175 acres of land which will be affected by proposed levee modification and improvement in Lee County, Arkansas. During the course of the survey four historic sites and one prehistoric site were noted within the area to be impacted. Based on the evaluation of material examined and consideration of National Register criteria for assessing significance, these cultural resources are not of local, regional, or national significance. An additional previously recorded site (3Le3) falls within the project right-of-way. Based on intensive surface and subsurface examination of the site and evaluation of previously published material, it is recommended that project plans be altered to avoid the Barrett Site (3Le3) and its immediate surroundings.

Heartfield, Price and Greene, Inc. of Monroe, Louisiana, was contracted by the United States Corps of Engineers, Mobile District to: a) conduct a cultural resources inventory of proposed dam and dry impoundment areas north of Ross Barnett Reservoir and, b) to conduct a cultural resources reconnaissance of the Pearl River, between River Mile 278 and 301, in the vicinity of Jackson, Mississippi. This report has collected and synthesized environmental, archeological, ethnographic, and historic data pertaining to the study area. The study revealed that almost no cultural resources research had been conducted within the dry impoundment area. Eight archeological sites had been recorded along the margins of the dry impoundment area. No information could be found concerning three 'Indian mounds' depicted on U.S.G.S. quad maps. Approximately 560 acres within the two proposed dam alignments and their associated spillways were surveyed. Nine locations of cultural resources (1 prehistoric site, 6 structures and 4 historic sites) were located. All are described. Approximately 837 acres were surveyed between River Miles 278 and 301. Five previously recorded sites were visited; two previously recorded sites could not be reached because of flooding. Six new cultural resource locations (5 structures and a historic site) were recorded.
