LE COUT ENTRAINE PAR LA REHABILITATION DES OUVRAGES EN BETON ARME CORRODES EST UNE SOURCE D'INQUIETUDE MONDIALE. LES MECANISMES DE REACTION-DIFFUSION IMPLIQUES DURANT LE TRANSPORT DES IONS CHLORURE, QUI SONT A L'ORIGINE DE LA CORROSION DES ARMATURES, SONT DONC ETUDIES DANS LE CAS D'UN BETON SATURE. LA LITTERATURE NOUS INFORME QUE DE NOMBREUSES METHODES EXPERIMENTALES AINSI QUE DES MODELES EXISTENT AFIN DE COMPRENDRE ET DE DECRIRE LE TRANSPORT DE CES IONS. TOUTEFOIS, IL APPARAIT QUE DIFFERENTS PARAMETRES OBTENUS EMPIRIQUEMENT SONT SOUVENT DIFFICILES A COMPARER ENTRE EUX ET CERTAINES OBSERVATIONS EXPERIMENTALES RESTENT INEXPLIQUEES. A PARTIR DE CE CONSTAT, UNE THEORIE ENCORE PEU UTILISEE DANS LE DOMAINE DU GENIE CIVIL, APPELEE L'APPROCHE MULTI-ESPECES, EST PRESENTEE. CETTE APPROCHE, QUI PREND EN COMPTE LES INTERACTIONS ENTRE LES DIFFERENTES ESPECES IONIQUES PRESENTES DANS LA SOLUTION INTERSTITIELLE DU BETON, A ETE UTILISEE POUR MODELISER LA DIFFUSION ET LA MIGRATION DE PLUSIEURS ESPECES IONIQUES DANS DES MILIEUX POREUX SATURES. UN NOUVEAU MODELE NUMERIQUE, APPELE MSDIFF, POUR MULTI-SPECIES DIFFUSION, A ETE DEVELOPPE AFIN DE SIMULER DIVERSES SITUATIONS QUI IMPLIQUENT LE TRANSPORT DES IONS CHLORURE. GRACE A MSDIFF, DIVERS RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX TROUVES DANS LA LITTERATURE ET QUI N'ETAIENT PAS TRES BIEN COMPRIS, PEUVENT MAINTENANT ETRE EXPLIQUES. ENSUITE, MSDIFF A ETE UTILISE POUR SIMULER DES ESSAIS D'IMMERSION EFFECTUES SUR DIFFERENTS BETONS. LES SIMULATIONS MONTRENT, A L'AIDE D'UNE ETUDE DE SENSIBILITE, QUELS SONT LES PHENOMENES QUI ONT LE PLUS D'INFLUENCE SUR LE TRANSPORT DES IONS CHLORURE. PARMI EUX, LA FIXATION DES IONS PAR LE BETON ET LA COMPOSITION DE LA SOLUTION INTERSTITIELLE SEMBLENT AVOIR LE PLUS GRAND EFFET. ENFIN, LES SIMULATIONS DEMONTRENT CLAIREMENT QU'IL N'EST PAS RAISONNABLE D'UTILISER UNE METHODE EMPIRIQUE POUR PREDIRE LA VITESSE DE PENETRATION DES IONS CHLORURE. L'UTILISATION DES LOIS DE FICK POUR PREDIRE A LONG TERME EST DONC FORTEMENT REMISE EN CAUSE.

Chloride-induced corrosion is the most important durability issue of reinforced concrete structures, and the prediction and prevention of chloride-induced corrosion has attracted considerable interest all over the world. Given that chloride penetrates through the concrete cover, the issues concerning its transport are crucial. These include testing methods, prediction, and the prevention of ingress. During the transport process, physical and chemical interaction occurs between chloride and cement hydrates, which in turn affects the further transport, so the transport of chloride and these interactions are closely related and underpin our understanding of chloride-induced corrosion in RC structures. This book provides in-depth discussion of chloride transport and its interaction in cement-based materials, and reviews and summarizes the state of the art. The mechanisms and testing methods for chloride transport, chemical interactions of chloride with cement hydrates, chloride binding isotherms, measurement of penetration depths, factors affecting chloride transport, and modeling of chloride transport are discussed in detail. This book serves as a reference for researchers or engineer, and a textbook for graduate students.

Porous and Complex Flow Structures in Modern Technologies represents a new approach to the field, considering the fundamentals of porous media in terms of the key roles played by these materials in modern technology. Intended as a text for advanced undergraduates and as a reference for practicing engineers, the book uses the physics of flows in porous materials to tie together a wide variety of important issues from such fields as biomedical engineering, energy conversion, civil engineering, electronics, chemical engineering, and environmental engineering. Thus, for example, flows of water and oil through porous ground play a central role in energy exploration and recovery (oil wells, geothermal fluids), energy conversion (effluents from refineries and power plants), and environmental engineering (leachates from waste repositories). Similarly, the demands of miniaturization in electronics and in biomedical applications are driving research into the flow of heat and fluids through small-scale porous media (heat exchangers, filters, gas exchangers). Filters, catalytic converters, the drying of stored grains, and a myriad of other applications involve flows through porous media. By providing a unified theoretical framework that includes not only the traditional homogeneous and isotropic media but also models in which the assumptions of representative elemental volumes or global thermal equilibrium fail, the book provides practicing engineers the tools they need to analyze complex situations that arise in practice. This volume includes examples, solved problems and an extensive glossary of symbols.
