Surrounding the Bighorn Basin are several mountainous tracts, including the Beartooth range, which were formed by uplift and thrusting during the Laramian Revolution. Each mountain range exposes a core of Precambrian crystalline rocks, with peripheral drapes of Paleozoic and younger sediments. Results of geophysical work have served to emphasize the magnitude of vertical relief resulting in large part from Laramian movements. For example, the surface between the Flathead sandstone and Precambrian crystallines on the Beartooth Plateau is at 12,000 ft. above sea level, but near Red Lodge this surface is found to be more than 10,000 ft. below sea level. --Introduction, first paragraph.

The primary objectives of this investigation have been to: 1) Map the structural relationships along a major part of the east and northeast sides of the Beartooth Mountains; 2) Incorporate with the present studies the best and most recent mapping of others in adjacent areas and to compile a geologic map of the structural relationships around the perimeter of Beartooth block, as well as a portion of the Precambrian core; 3) Relate the structural patterns of the Beartooth mountain front to adjacent structural units; 4) Determine the chronology of geologic events particularly as they pertain to the Beartooth Mountains; and 5) Interpret the nature of deformation of the Beartooth block by relating facts to each other and separating these insofar as possible from speculations.
