The lighted clock tower of Union Station, the marquee of the Bijou Theater, and the spacious lobby of the Penobscot Exchange Hotel are memorable images from Bangor's past. Settled in 1769, Bangor boomed as the lumbering capital of the world in the nineteenth century and as a retail hub in the twentieth century. For one hundred years, picture postcards have showcased West Broadway's mansions and the steamboat and railroad terminals along the Penobscot riverfront. Bangor in Vintage Postcards includes images from the city's past, ranging from a World War I victory parade to the 1923 flood.

In 1783, Peter Clinch arrived at the mouth of the Magaguadavic River and, finding he could not navigate the forty-foot falls, climbed up the cliffs of the Fundy shoreline. On the intervale above, he founded the town of St. George. The falls were to play a significant role in the development of the area, driving mills first for the granite works and later for the pulp mill that became the economic mainstay of the town. The stunning photographs in St. George and Its Neighbours tell the story of how the town of St. George was built, how it developed, and how it survived various calamities like fires, industry closure, and highway realignment. This spectacular collection of images, which date from as early as 1890, focuses on the people of St. George and the surrounding communities and includes where they worshipped, worked, relaxed, fished, and farmed. Major storms, spring freshets, ball games, and crowds listening to the local brass band make up a sampling of the events covered in this lively book. Glimpses of picture-perfect fishing villages, smart resorts with turreted hotels, Fundy's lonely clam flats, winding hiking trails, and sandy beaches make clear why the surrounding areas were considered for the province's first national park in the 1940s. Toy's collection of images and Goss's narrative combine to recount the history and beauty of the St. George area. Book jacket.

The Great Fire of May 3, 1901 marked at once the end and the beginning of the City of Jacksonville. A thriving port and a center for business and tourism until that point, Jacksonville was devastated by the conflagration, and yet, even before the ashes had cooled, a building boom began. Prominent and aspiring architects flocked to the area and the opportunities it afforded them to create a "twentieth century city." Jacksonville's ensuing era of reconstruction and growth, which would continue until the United States entered World War I in 1917, helped to define the city's present personality and appearance.

When Somerset County, named in honor of Lord Baltimore's sister Lady Mary Somerset, was first established by the Colony of Maryland in 1666, it encompassed more than 16,000 square miles on the Eastern Shore, including what are today's Worcester and Wicomico Counties and part of lower Delaware. By the end of the 18th century, the county, much smaller in geography by then, had become home to more than 15,000 residents. Communities such as Crisfield, Deal Island, Princess Anne, Smith Island, and others have thrived since that time, with the industries of agriculture, seafood, and tourism sustaining the hardworking and spirited residents who have made their home in this county by the Chesapeake Bay.
