He assisted in the endowment of the Chair of Ecclesiastical History in the General Theological Seminary, the only professorship for which even a partial endowment was raised between 1833 and 1837. He married first Susan Barclay, and second, Helen Sarah Rutherfurd, and being childless, devised most of his estate to Stuyvesant Rutherfurd, his great - grandnephew, on condition that he change his name to Rutherfurd Stuyvesant.
