"Each of Ed Carpenter's installations is an emotional intervention into the architecture, intrinsic to the space while also an artistic overlay. His art re-interprets the space, creating sub-texts and spatial complexity, using varieties of scale, color, light, material and depth to articulate his response to each place. Working in glass, aluminium, stainless steel, cables and computer-controlled lighting, his vocabulary blends seamlessly into the language of architecture. Each piece seems to grow from its place, reach for the light, and breath its own life. The imagery evoked is simultaneously technological and biological, engineered and expressive. This book presents the portion of Carpenter's work which is specifically concerned with light and architectural sculpture, leaving for another effort a number of projects, such as bridges and urban sculptures, which have other primary concerns."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Accounts of the most significant commissions (including NYPL) examine the institutional structure and organizational framework of public art patronage and production and document the complicated maneuvering for commissions. The book is an expanded, pictorial review of the history of painting in Oregon from 1859-1959. The first edition was published as an encyclopedia and index of Oregon painters with historical data about the evolution of painting styles, educational institutions, and exhibition venues in the Northwest; this book expands the focus on the history of painting in Oregon, adding essays on Impressionism and Modernism while using more and better visual examples to illustrate the strength of the state's early painters. In addition, the original indexed content has been edited and condensed. Oregon Painters fills an important niche, as little has been written about the early history of Northwest art and this volume serves as a valuable resource for discovering artists who remain largely unknown but whose works continue to gain in reputation and value.

The Chicago-based art program "Culture in Action" addressed such pressing urban issues as minority youth leadership and gang violence, HIV/AIDS caregiving, public housing, multicultural demographics and neighborhood, achievements by women, labor and management relations, and ecology. "Culture in Action" took place from 1992 through 1993 and was organized by Sculpture Chicago, a decade-old visual arts organization that specializes in unique public art and education programs. Seeking to bridge art and life, eight innovative artist and community partnerships unfolded with results as diverse as a storefront hydroponic garden, a new line of candy, and an ecological field station. These investigations into urban artmaking were activated by participating artists selected by curator Mary Jane Jacob for their interest in critical social issues and testing the boundaries of public art.

From Seattle’s earliest days as a Gold Rush boomtown to its celebration of the future during the 1962 World’s Fair, local artists have created public art installations—statuary, reliefs and other sculpture—that have become familiar features of the city’s landscape. This comprehensive study of 12 Seattle sculptors and their works examines the motivations of the artists and their benefactors, the development of the city’s public art policy, and the political forces behind the pieces that are now part of the city’s rich history. Biographical details and historical perspective are provided for such artists as Lorado Taft, Alice Robertson Carr, John Carl Ely, Max P. Nielsen, August Werner and James FitzGerald.
