Hayes's principal utopian contribution to Northwest literature was "Portland, Oregon, A.D. 1999," a story that first appeared in 1913. He framed this tale so that it resembled Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward (1888). The main character is an elderly woman who has seen Portland in the year 1999 and returns to the city around 1911 to offer "prophecies" of how life would change. Her predictions emphasize how technological change and social reform produced a sort of Christian socialism that would make Portland a nearly perfect city. Note how people of color are described at the end of the included text. In a chapter not included here, Hayes's prophet envisioned a truly utopian transformation -- doctors, lawyers, and ministers who work not for themselves but for the public good as defined by city commissioners (Hayes 1913:15) -- University of Washington website.

Excerpt from Portland Oregon A. D. 1999: And Other Sketches In introducing my little romance to the public, I do so with little misgivings or apologies. The close observer will agree that the changes that are anticipated - here related as established facts - are merely the signs of the times, and that not one-half of the story is told. One might wish to be a living witness of the great projects occurring A. D. 1999, and may possibly resent that he was not born later on in the cycles of Time, but if his heart is in the right place he can realize that there is nothing lost, and his soul goes marching onward and upward in its eternal flight. "Oh, sometimes gleams upon our sight Thro' present wrong, the eternal right; And step by step, since time began, We see the steady gain of Man." A rollicking look at popular culture’s most beloved sleuth: “For even the casual fan, the history of this deathless character is fascinating” (The Boston Globe). Today he is the inspiration for fiction adaptations, blockbuster movies, hit television shows, raucous Twitter banter, and thriving subcultures. More than a century after Sherlock Holmes first capered into our world, what is it about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s peculiar creation that continues to fascinate us? Journalist and lifelong Sherlock fan Zach Dundas set out to find the answer. The result is The Great Detective: a history of an idea, a biography of someone who never lived, a tour of the borderland between reality and fiction, and a joyful romp through the world Conan Doyle bequeathed us. In this “wonderful book” (Booklist, starred review), Dundas unearths the inspirations behind Holmes and his indispensable companion, Dr. John Watson; explores how they have been kept alive over the decades by writers, actors, and readers; and visits locales—from the boozy annual New York City gathering of one of the world’s oldest and most exclusive Sherlock Holmes fan societies; to a freezing Devon heath out of The Hound of the Baskervilles; to sunny Pasadena, where Dundas chats with the creators of the smash BBC series Sherlock. Along the way, he discovers the ingredients that have made Holmes go viral—then, now, and as long as the game’s afoot.
