Excerpt from Port Arthur, the Siege and Capitulation These objections, which apply so forcibly to an attempt to write a history of the campaign in Man churia, only in a small measure exist when an eye witness essays to write the story of the Siege of Port Arthur. The work of the artillery and engineers, which played such an important part in the siege, could be easily watched; but beyond that, there was no opportunity for a display of grand strategy or the high art of war before the Russian stronghold. Both were limited to the placing of thousands of men in as close proximity as possible to the enemy's works, and at periodical intervals calling upon them to attack. Excerpt from The Great Siege: The Investment and Fall of Port Arthur The siege of Port Arthur forms a well-defined episode, separated from and practically independent of the other events of the great war between Russia and Japan. Clear in outline and complete in itself, it stands out in bold relief from the more complex and intricate operations at the main theatre of war. As all the fighting took place over a comparatively small area, the events of the siege have been easy to follow and understand. I, as correspondent of the Daily Mail, had the privilege of watching the operations from the first day to the capitulation. From a military point of view the siege of Port Arthur derives its greatest interest from the fact that it is the first regular siege that has been carried out against a modern fortress during the last half century. The science of modern military engineering, all its new improvements in the art of fortification and in the means of destruction, have here stood their first practical test, and the question of the chances of the offensive against the defensive under modern conditions has to a large extent been solved. Excerpt from The Truth About Port Arthur The siege of Port Arthur was the event of the late war in the Far East which most attracted the attention and interest of the rest of the world. There were other military operations, it is true, of equal if not of greater importance to the ultimate issue of the struggle; but, owing to their complexity, their slowness, and the absence of definite advance information, their progress and purport were not easily grasped by any save military students. The case of Port Arthur was different. The long drawn-out agony of the siege was continued before the eyes of the world for many months, *6 and, while the imagination was touched by its romantic side, the point at issue was at once apparent. Even so, there was much mystery about the conduct of the defence and the eventual fall of the Fortress; for, owing to its remote position and almost complete isola tion by the enemy, the available information almost entirely consisted of that supplied by correspondents with the Japanese, and was, therefore, information from the outside, and more or less a history of results alone. In 1907, or between two and three years after the culmina tion of the siege, the inevitable disclosures - the aftermath of defeat - which sometimes help to an appreciation of causes began to be made in Russia. Excerpt from The Siege and Fall of Port Arthur I have been asked to write a short preface to this book, and I am glad to do so, having had the pleasure of making the author's acquaintance during a three-weeks' voyage across the Northern Pacific in March 1904, and having subsequently renewed that acquaintance at Tokyo and in front of Port Arthur. In Chapter VIII. Mr. Richmond Smith graphic ally describes the irritation aroused among the Press correspondents by their long detention in Japan. Such irritation may have been natural enough, but the display of it was futile, and the correspondents who, like the author, kept their tempers and held their tongues were regarded with greater respect by the authorities than those who gave full expression to their impatience and indignation. In fact, no one is less liable to be influenced by strong language than the Japanese official, whti has been taught to regard any dis play of emotion as impolite and unbecoming.
