"I describe the contribution made by several historical North American data bases to our understanding of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) population dynamics. I also discuss patterns in population-level research on this insect, as revealed by the relevant world literature. These results suggest that little organized effort has been made to use this historical record as a basis for planning either management or further research. A thorough analysis of the relevant historical record should precede, or at least accompany, organized research and development efforts on this or any other major pest.
