Excerpt from Popular Lectures on Scientific Subjects The first and second Lectures have already appeared in print; the first in a university programme which, however, was not published. The second appeared in the 'kieler Monatsschrift' for May, 1853, but owing to the restricted circulation of that journal, became but little known; both have, accordingly, been reprinted. The third and fourth Lectures have not previously appeared. These Lectures, called forth as they have been by incidental occasions, have not, of course, been composed in accordance with a rigidly uniform plan. Each of them has been kept perfectly independent of the others. Hence some amount of repetition has been unavoidable, and the first four may perhaps seem somewhat confusedly thrown together. If I may claim that they have any leading thought, it would be that I have endeavoured to illustrate the essence and the import of Natural laws, and their relation to the mental activity of man. This seems to me the chief interest and the chief need in Lectures before a public whose education has been mainly literary. Excerpt from Scientific Lectures IN these days of limited leisure, and continually increasing literary activity, when there is more and more that every intelligent man would wish to read, and apparently less and less time for'reading, an apology is required for the publication of a book, however small, which does not profess to contain anything absolutely new. At the same time, the very circum stances above referred to, render it desirable that the observations of specialists should be condensed and epitomized for the general reader, and hence the continually increasing demand for lectures; which freed not, because they are popular, be the less truly scientific. Excerpt from Popular Lectures on Scientific Subject The favour with which the first series of Professor Helmholtz's Lectures has been received would justify, if a justification were needed, the publication of the present volume. Especially have these requests come from public libraries and from high schools, Where, in some instances, the books have been used in the chemistry and science reading courses. Excerpt from Gleanings in Science: A Series of Popular Lectures on Scientific Subjects I have endeavoured to supply, in some measure, the place of Experiments, by means of'iilustrations introduced into the text. Some of these Illustra tions represent instruments or apparatus of histo rical interest which are already familiar to the scientific public; but most of them have been spe cially drawn, for the present work, from the apparatus used in my own Experiments. I am in debted to the kindness of Mr. Whymper for the four woodcuts which illustrate the last Lecture in the Volume, and which are taken from his well-known and attractive Scrambles amongst the Alps. Excerpt from Scientific Lectures and Essays This little book, including the greater part of this Preface, has shaped itself out of lectures given to the young men of the city of Chester. But it does not deal, in its present form, with the geology of the neighbourhood of Chester only. I have tried so to recast it that any townsman, at least in the manufacturing districts of England and Scotland, may learn from it to judge, roughly perhaps, but on the whole accurately, of the rocks and soils of his own neighbourhood. He will find, it is true, in these pages, little or nothing about those "Old Red Sandstones," so interesting to a Scotchman; and he will have to bear in mind, if he belong to the coal districts of Scotland, that the "stones in the wall" there belong to much older rocks than those "New Red Sandstones" of which this book treats; and that the coal measures of Scotland, with the volcanic rocks which have disturbed them, are often very different in appearance to the English coal measures. Excerpt from Popular Lectures on Scientific Subjects In compliance with many requests, I beg to offer to the public a series of popular Lectures which I have delivered on various occasions. They are designed for readers who, without being professionally occupied with the study of Natural Science, are yet interested in the scientific results of such studies. The difficulty, felt so strongly in printed scientific lectures, namely, that the reader cannot see the experiments, has in the present case been materially lessened by the numerous illustrations which the publishers have liberally furnished. The first and second Lectures have already appeared in print; the first in a university programme which, however, was not published. The second appeared in the 'Kieler Monatsschrift' for May, 1853, but owing to the restricted circulation of that journal, became but little known; both have, accordingly, been reprinted. Excerpt from Popular Scientific Lectures Popular lectures, owing to the knowledge they presuppose, and the time they occupy, can afford only a modicum of instruction. They must select for this purpose easy subjects, and restrict themselves to the exposition of the simplest and the most essential points. Nevertheless, by an appropriate choice of the matter, the charm and the poetry of research can be conveyed by them. It is only necessary to set forth the attractive and the alluring features of a problem, and to show what broad domains of fact can be illuminated by the light radiating from the solution of a single and ofttimes unobtrusive point. Furthermore, such lectures can exercise a favorable influence by showing the substantial sameness of scientific and every-day thought. The public, in this way, loses its shyness towards scientific questions, and acquires an interest in scientific work which is a great help to the inquirer. The latter, in his turn, is brought to understand that his work is a small part only of the universal process of life, and that the results of his labors must redound to the benefit not only of himself and a few of his associates, but to that of the collective whole. I sincerely hope that these lectures, in the present excellent translation, will be productive of good in the direction indicated.
